87 turbo II

Is 180 000km's alot for an 87 Rx-7 Turbo II?

I'm really interested in picking up an rx-7 but I know nothing of rotaries, they scare me :)

I read the what to look for when buying a used Rex, the faq says on average the turbo cars are good up to 100 000miles what happens after that what am I pottentiolly looking at for failures?

nonameo 12-23-03 12:42 PM

if it has that many miles the motor has probably been replaced already.

Gotrek 12-23-03 12:43 PM

it's kilometers.

It's 112 500 Miles on it

teh ive seen some with 240,000 your gonna need a new engine or rebuild unless it was recently rebuilt.Expect to be replacing alot of old parts because at 180,000 it's getting up there and shits gonna stop working or need to be replaced. If the motor in it now has 112,500 miles on it you still may need a rebuild.Get a compression check.

I've rebuilt many top ends of regular 4 cylinder engines, and done 1 complete rebuilt on a v8 how difficult is it compared to this? what's the typical cost for a rebuilt kit +machining? (do rotaries need to be machined when rebuilt?)

hey are u looking at the Red 87 T2 for sale for the around 6500 mark?

Gotrek 12-23-03 12:52 PM

I think it's dark red yes, and asking price is 5k canadian so like 5$ US :D :D :D

Sesshoumaru 12-23-03 12:56 PM

my rx7 is 226k miles.

had engine replace at 190k and 210k :)

i think my engine was good though (turbo prolly went out) :) It gave me an excuse to streetport

I kinda was looking at that car.. for 5 i sounds like a decent deal

Rotaries don't need machining when being rebuilt. Do it yourself rebuilds run from 700ish-1200ish. That is just for the rebuild kit. If any rotors or rotor housings need to be replace the price will go up.

Everyone says it can be done by a first timer. Just get the rebuild video from www.atkinsrotary.com and take your time.

I'm sure it's within my skill level, My main concerns as always were rust since I hate doing body work, mechanicly I can do anything just wasn't sure how hard rotaries are to work on and how pricey.

Yeah for 5k it sounded like a good deal as long as it doesn't need anything that can't wait 3 months (winter is long)

Owner stated it ran rough and required a tuneup, last time i heard that the car wouldn't start and had a blown headgasket (87GXLRX7 - the Supra for sale on the heights)

I guess I'll go see it after all, add mentionned it was repainted which sets off my warning radar, it only shows rust were the sunroof is apparently that's common.

Thanks for the info knowledge is power after all.

Mmm I was just remembering isn't it fairly easy to swap a chevy V8 in an RX-7? If the engine blows I could just do that, cheap engine as long as I'm not wrong about the swap being easy :)

Ok Thank guys, I guess I'll go look at it and see when I get there.

Fitness Stain 12-29-03 08:50 AM

when i got mine it had about 188,000 on the dial....

about 5 months later it blew....

:D

Gotrek 12-29-03 08:51 AM

oh great that gives me confidence :)

Edit 188 000Miles is 30X 000Km's so this car as about half of that :)

it has 110 000Miles

Fitness Stain 12-29-03 09:10 AM

my wastegate actuator hose or whatever had been cut, and i didnt notice that till after the engine was being disassembled... so that means that i was way over boosting, and thats probally what led to the cars quick demise...it wasnt in the best of shape from the get go, but im sure it would have lasted longer had i been able to fix that hose .... oh well...
