87 rx7 problem

there is this rx7 for sale down my block...brand new turbo 2 motor droped in it and it runs fine until it all of a sudden cuts out....kid says it might be an electrical problem from when they put the motor in.....what do u suggest to do to fix it?? i can buy it for a grand.....should i just get a whole new wiring harness and ECU put in?? or have a shop look at it and determine whats wrong?? or does anyone know what could be causing this????any help is appreciated

This is just my personal experience with an 87 TII, but if it runs FINE and then suddenly cuts out, it could very easily be an electrical problem. Maybe the connector plug at the air flow meter, the plug at the injectors' solenoid resistor (if applicable), a primary wire in the electrical system, or similar.

What happens when it cuts out? Do wipers or other electrical components work? How "suddenly" does it shut down? How does he get it re-started?

Edit: There's lots of opportunity for guessing on this one, but I would definitely check out all the connections and such before even thinking about the ECU, wiring harness replacement, or anything expensive.

one grand for a TII and it starts ..snap er up ..if she dies (blows up) everybody and their dog will want parts ..you'll recoup your loss ..quick..just my opinion..I hate livin in CANADA!!..you guys get all the good deals in the US!!..(sniffle..wah!!!)

If you are comfortable with troubleshooting electrical problems, the it sounds like a good deal assuming that everything else is in good shape.

Once you get into it, you may find that the wiring has been hacked to the point that it's useless (for some reason, very common with these cars...damn highschool owners...) so don't be surprised if you need to replace or totally rewire the engine. Good used harnesses are getting harder to find since the connectors quickly get baked on turbo cars. If you are planning to mod the car, this is a perfect excuse to go to a standalone as your first major mod...Of course, if you are just beginning, then it's hard to recommend any of this. :)

Its probably just hitting fuel cut....:)

well from what i understand is that the guy taht put the motor in the car isnt good with wiring...the kid has no idea why it cuts out and dies in the middle of driving....it also runs a little rough too....the motor is a street ported s4 motor with a hybrid to4 turbo, full 3 in turbo back exhaust, fully suspension, brand new paint, rims, the car looks really nice....i just dont feel comfortable with the electrical problem....i need a car taht i can drive around in....since im new to rotory motors i dont know what i could all check on it....does anyone know if there is any rotory shops in the WI area?? that i could take the car to and have them fix it??

gxl87turbo 11-09-05 12:48 PM

WOW, i cant believe that you are bitching about getting a turbo 2 thats starts and has a new ported motor with a T04 turbo and a 3" down. From my point of view u dont understand about rx7s so it would be best if you just got a GEO and not ask stupid questions like this on the post.
People would die to have a turbo rx7 in that condition and that price!!!

lilskyline240 11-09-05 01:09 PM

sorry but i meant that i can get it for 6 grand... i must have missed typing the 6....and dont make fun of me for wanting an rx7...im not just some dumb ricer than like rx7's cuz of F&F....ive always liked them....and when i start lookin into them i get B**ched at....i think ill just stick with my nissan if the members of the mazda world are gunna treat me like crap for not knowing everything immediately.....

buttsjim 11-09-05 01:18 PM

Six grand seems quite high to me, especially since the car has unidentified problems. Also, you should probably just ignore the post just before your latest one--it wasn't well founded, and I don't think anyone else on this forum would agree with it.

Thanks man for some honest advice...unlike some ppl here.....yes i am a noob in the world of the rotary but i am by no means a noob in the world of cars.....

thanks to all who gave me input....i decided not to get the one with the electrical problems...i might just wait awhile and save up and get a nice one, and modify it myself....

if he doesn't have a fuel cut defensor with that sort of setup, it's DEFINITELY hitting fuel cut.

lilskyline240 11-09-05 07:40 PM

its hittin fuel cut which is making it die?? would that occur jsut in daily driving at like 5k rpm??

Aaron Cake 11-10-05 09:24 AM

Fuel cut only occurrs under boost. It feels like hitting a wall.
