87 GXL problem...

Yay, first post, I hope I can solve this... anyways, I'm not a car expert ("yet",slowly workin on it though), so I might not know what people are trying to say to me:confused: (I will eventually catch on and figure it out) , anyways here we go... ok, just before winter (october I think) , I go out for a coffee in my 87' GXL, get my coffee etc. and then decide to go to my friends place, I try to start the car to no avail, I know about the flooding problems, and had to take the chip out many times before, so I do that and it still does not start. So, we decide to push start it. The car push started fine but alot of white smoke (not sure if if it was white or what was coming out, that's what my friends said) was coming out of the exhaust. Anyways I turned the car off at my friends house and when I go to start the car it starts fine with no problems. I go home. Next day, the car does not start again, it's cold out, and the battery dies from me trying to start it, so I try to jump start it, nothing, it wont turn over. So we decide to push start it again... only this time the car does'nt push start.. we tried so many times to push start it but it would not go, so I just put her away for the winter (more liked pushed :( ) . Finally(now) it gets a little warmer out and the battery is all charged up, we give it another try (praying that the engine was just really flooded and hoping it had evaporated). I try to start it but it will not turn over, it makes a spinning sound when I turn the key like the sound it makes before the explosions in the engine start hapenning, but there are no explosions. All the belts turn when I turn the key but the engine does not want to start. A few of my mechanic friends said it was the starter... but what I want to know, is why it will not push start, you don't need a starter to push start, correct? It push starter once and was fine that night when I started it, but after that night the car just basically "Died"... Any help would be appreciated ... I'm not an expert so I have no clue wtf is going on, especially since it won't push start... That's all (sorry it was so long), if anyone needs to know any information to help me out, I'm sure one of my friends can help me figure out what it is u need to know... thanx

P.S. - I will get better at fixing my "beast" (first car) :), everyone's a newbie sometime , lates. :D

Your engine might be blown but i dunno just a thought

Hopefully all you need is lubricant to reseal the rotors. On these engines, too much gasoline will wash the oil off of the apex seals and side seals, resulting in no compression. Without compression, the engine will not start. First off, disable the fuel pump, you do not need any more gas in there until everything is lubricated again. I suggest unplugging the pump, the plug is on the drivers side rear shock tower under the carpeting. Then, pull the plugs. If they are wet with fuel, dry them off. In the leading spark plug holes, inject oil or ATF (oil will do the least damage, ATF works the best) and turn the engine over a few times. Repeat once or twice. After putting all the plugs back in, you should now have compression. Plug the fuel pump back in and crank it, it should start. If it does, it will smoke like crazy, don't worry about it, it should clear off in about 10-20 minutes! If this doesn't help, do a compression test to see if the engine is blown or not. Good luck!

Before you start getting edgy about money go get new spark plugs an wires. You could just have bad wires and/or plugs. maybe you should clean your current plugs first.(DO NOT USE A WIRE BRUSH) it can mess them up. but just do little things. If it fires up good, if not tell us what is happening. If it turns out your old plugs and wires were O.K. guess what...you got a spare. in case shit happens. good luck and keep us posted about this. Do the wires before the ATF trick please. this will be alittle safer dude. If it still doesn't work ATF or oil here you come. Good luck.

Charles

Here's another question... Is taking out the chip for the fuel pump the same as unplugging it?? ... OK, me and a buddy just injected oil and gave it a try, it sounded like there was a little bit of compression at first, but then faded, but we have not unplugged the fuel pump yet... we are going to try and unplug it now and reput oil in the plug holes, I'll reply if this works, and also if it doesn't ... thx :D
