86 FC stuck in reverse.

Hey you guys, I drove my car to work like normal and backed it into the parking space. At the end of the day when I went to drive home, I saw that the car was stuck in reverse and wont go into fifth at all. After doing some searching I see that Miatas have this issue and I was wondering if this "field repair" applies to our cars... If so I will try it tomorrow... Thanks for any input...

Mine did this as well. Field repair will work, but it's frustrating fighting the trans tunnel with the end of the screwdriver. Just keep at it and be careful not to mar up the threads for the reverse sensor.

Brand new baby.... It only took 15min to fix--I am actually sad that I didnt do this on Sunday when it happened... I expected it to take a long time so I waited for a day off and it only took 15min... lol

Yea... I know b/c when it happened to me, I thought the same thing like "Man, how could the tranny just go bad like this." But due to the fact that I new how good it was driving earlier that day, I knew something had to give. After a little bit of googling I found the writeup about the Miata and thought that I would give it a try... I just wish I did it sooner.. :dunno:

ive got the same problem. ive been going at it for about two hours and i can feel it moving (im using a small alan wrench, only tool i could get to fit between the trans and the tunnel) itll go what feels like halfway then slips out and goes back into the position it was in before. any suggestions?

Maybe try undoing the trany crossmember and and lowering the tail end of the trans slightly and or using a stock jack to push the trans to one side to gain a bit more room
