6500 RPM Hesitation Help!!
 

Hi Everyone,

I'm experiencing the above problem and was wondering if anyone could offer their thoughts as to why.

My car is an 86' TII that's completely stock except for an Apexi BOV and TT. I've completed the following maintenance work on the car, oil/filter change, fuel filter change, plugs and leads changed, new aircleaner, new vacume and intercooler piping, new water pipes, coolant change, TPS adjusted.

When I get to 6500 the car almost feels like it switches off and won't rev any further. I'm under the impression it's an electrical problem,my alternator produces 14v at idle but I think my battery may be on its last legs, could this cause the problem?

I was thinking of checking the following items:
Battery change
Voltage at fuel pump
Fuel filter at fuel pump
Exhaust
Grounding points
Replace TPS with spare in case it's faulty

Can anyone let me know if I'm on the right track or offer further insight into the problem??

first off i was unaware that the made t2 is 86 ;) BUT is your problem like it just slowes up or it actually stops there? cause in my 87 i had this problem where under full bost when i got to around 6500 RPM my car would not accelerate as fast as it got there actually enough that my back would come off of the seat. i didnt think much of it i just shifted befoer it happened but then i had the car on the dyno and you would actually see that the houres power would drop off up there so i got to thinking and took out the air filter (stock) and the problem went away and the horse power curve kept going up... (point being the car is sufficating in the upper RPM's under boost)

Acceleration basically stops there, I've replaced the stock airfilter with a K&N which I've cleaned recently.

Maybe the exhaust is clogged and acting like an exhaust brake.

ya that could be true you may need a some new cats or maybe just a straight pipe ;)

sounds like fuel cut. Buy a FCD from Racing Beat and install it. If that doesn't fix it, then check your cats. But my best guess is fuel cut. You'll need it anyways. FCD is a basic must have for any TIIs.

i dont think its fuel cut that would be a much more violent slow down and if hes done it a few times the motor would have poped. also if hes as stock as he says hes only runing 5-6 PSI fuel cut isnt till 8.5 PSI

I know this is ancient, but I'm experiencing pretty much the exact same thing. I frequently hit a wall at 6500 RPM under load (but not when revving in neutral, it happily flies by 6500 then), it feels like total fuel cut, it will lurch terribly, and I don't have the nerve to keep the gas pedal down to find out what happens. '87 TII, COMPLETELY stock. Air filter is fairly clean, plugs and wires are new and all the injectors are supposed to be new, and I recently adjusted the TPS back to spec. The fuel pump might be new, I'll have to check, but the filter probably needs to be changed. Any suggestions? I think I'll run injector cleaner through the gas soon, but if that doesn't work I'll be hoping for some other ideas.
