6000 and 1 imports - all i need is one
 

I was going to get a engine, tranny and ecu from osaka but a few peeps in the 1st gen forum told me that they suck ass.. but in nicer words. Now I am not so sure about importers. I live in the northeastern united states and don't want to pay high shipping rates.

If you have bought or know if someone that has bought a jdm t2 engine from a reliable source and have had no problems please let me know. I have to buy an engine soon or wify will find out I have extra cash laying around and then I will have to wait another year :squint:

I am sure if its in jersey or new york I can pick it up. just that all that I have called people just sound shady as hell over the phone. I don't want to get robbed. I have about 1500 or so. so don't lead me to someone that going to sell me a whole freaking car for like 6000 grand ;)

maybe im not reading the post right but you need to keep in mind that JDM engines can be VERY OLD (long time without usage). so its a general rule of thumb to rebuild them with new soft seals or plan to do them soon.

I got a jdm s5 t2 motor from sunrise japanese in canada...took two weeks to get it...total was $1350 shipped to houston. It has been in for over a year and half and is still running strong as hell, good compression, strong turbo pull...

Sunrise Japanese had really good customer service an I am really pleased with the deal over all.

With all that said, a lot of people have had problems with JDM motors for reasons previous mentioned by gxlbiscuit...

Why would you waste time and money importing a JDM 13bt when you can get a rebuilt USDM one in the states? There really isn't much difference between the two engines. Buying used JDM engines is a huge gamble especially from places like Osaka, if you bought one from them chances are you would have to rebuild it anyway. If your that bent on getting a JDM engine deffinatley pm japan2la, you won't be dissapionted.

Depends on if you have a core, where you're located in the US etc.

Buy a dead s5 long block in the US for 2-500 depending on how dead it is.
Count on the possibility of needing a new rotor housing or two (200 used up to 450 new per housing)
May need a new rotor or two (200 per)
Actual rebuild and labor: (assuming you go with RotaryResurrection since you're extremely concerned with price AND you live within reasonably distance to TN) 1300 + the freight shipping for the core to and from your house.

Other re builders are more expensive, however they may be closer to you so you might recoup the shipping charges in their additional charges.

The only difference between buying a USDM core as listed above, and buying a JDM core is the first line.

Instead of: Buy a dead s5 long block in the US for 2-500 depending on how dead it is.

It would be: Gamble on a S5 long block from Japan that has questionable integrity on the compression numbers. You could strike gold and get a good running block. OR worst case you could end up needing two rotor housings, rotors, sideplates due to internal rust/blown seals. Either way, you just spent 1000-1500 + shipping.


Imo, the USDM path is "DIRTFT" (Do it right the first time). Which is also the path that I went down.

I already had a S5 t2 that had a very badly blown rear rotor (Housing and rotor were trashed). So I bought a JDM short block that had already been torn down and spec'd and I received pictures of the housings. They had less then 20k miles on them no wear at all. It ended up being a GREAT rebuild and 25k miles and 2 years later the engine it self runs perfectly.

All said and done the JDM housings, side plates and rotors were 800. Rebuild and street port with FD corner seals was 1600 or so + 1000 for Removal and re installation. I drove the car on 1 rotor and the turbo from Baltimore to TN which was probably the equivalent of shipping a motor in gas bills, but it was a few years ago when gas wasn't so insane.

Thats my opinion on things anywho.

I just want to get a complete swap and work on the car with my son. Buying and having one shipped here.. to me its easyEr than sourceing around for parts. Most of the sales reps that I talked to offer start up warrenties. I only have so much to spend $1500. I have found a few and people have told me of others that offer the engine, tranny, wiring harness and ecu for less than that. There was even one that offered everything in the engine bay for a few buks more. I know its a BIG gamble, but sourceing a dead engine getting it shipped here, then shipping it to a good rotory builder or even bringing it in to the mazda dealer.. just seems more of a pain. Not to mention buying all the parts that are messed up.

When I call around and ask questions I also state that I belong to a group called rx7club.com. I also mention that we are world wide and that we have threads posted about good engine sources and bad engine sources.


I have a very good friend that just bought a jdm engine from some place in jersey, his car is running very good right now. He allready made a round trip to boston and back with no problems. He plans on takeing the car to the mazda dealer to get it compression tested just to be sure what hes got.

It's not. This is my 3rd time around doing a swap and it's 100% easier to find someone that has a wrecked turbo car, go get it and tow it home, or someone parting out a turbo car. A complete swap would include Engine, Transmission, ECU, Driveshaft, Rear End, and Halfshafts. If you get lucky and find a front clip that includes these, yeah go for it. Most likely you will not.

Keep an eye on the For sale forum here on the rx7club and you'll find someone selling a complete swap, and they will be much easier to deal with then some JDM engine importer. I promise, I've done this before.
