5-Speed swap completed

well what can i say.................. it's done my 1990 Mazda Rx-7 N/A Auto is now officaly a 5-Speed. :D . And after all the money(about $800), bitching, cursing, and beating on things, all i can say is it was worth it all. i fell in love with my vert all over agian...... the car flies now burns out like crazy (can't wait to race my friends civic)
and i also wanna give a thanks to everyone who helped me with this: 'Vert in Vegas, knight1976 (both for all the parts), IceMark, hypntyz7 (both for advise, tips ) and whoever else that helped......
i still need a couple of parts, but i am driving it now(90 miles today already:D )
but i also now have so Q's: my cruise control dosen't work anymore anyone know y ?? i know its not a must but it would be nice concider how far i drive a day.
Also s4 shifter (not the knob, the shifter itself) will it work on my s5? (i did seach but was left a little confused about it and now i can't find it to reread)
i also need a shift boot where can i get one cheap (low on cash still from the swap)

you can use the shifter and look on ebay for the shifter boot they are always on there for the low low :)

schexy1 11-13-02 01:32 AM

congrats. I am attempting to do the same thing. How hard was it?

rx_7_driver 11-13-02 11:58 PM

not as hard as some people think, i had alot of help from here, and my friends (free labor all it cost me was to bring them ride in it after) the cross member is a sinch. the only realy hard part for me was getting the pedals back in the car.
oh and time comsuming it took me 3 weeks to do but i was was doing it at school (could only work on it when i had free time) and waiting for parts , u do not need the pedal assembly , unless u dont want to modifi your current pedal assembly, all u need is the clutch pedal and parts that go to it (spring and shit) and a ride to home depo...... (if u wanna know how i did this i will gladly write it up for you r anyone else)

like i said real easy (especily if u have a lift and all the tools in the world to use)
anything else u wanna know?

-Shawn

knight1976 11-14-02 12:07 AM

Congrats man im glad that ride is now a 5 speed and rolling again. :)

rx_7_driver 11-14-02 12:14 AM

yeah, i been meaning to e-mail u but i been real busy, my friend gave me a shifter knob so now all i need is the boot, how much wanna charge me for the cluster? (might as well get it while i can)

The '86-88 and '89-91 shift levers are interchangeable. However, the shaft of the lever that the knob threads on to are different sizes - the '86-88 levers are 12mm, and the '89-91 levers are 10mm.

As far as cruise control, check the easy stuff. Make sure the vacuum line to the cruise control unit is hooked up, and make sure the cruise control cable is hooked up to the throttle body. Also, make sure the "main" light on the cruise control switch lights up when you turn it on.

well it lights up, cable is hooked, i'll check the vacum line to see if it is hooked up tomorrow at school. i also have a lumpy idle everynow and then but it eventually goes away and comes back on its own

also to swap diffs. all i need is the diff it self? r do i need the half shafts to?

You just need to swap in the diffy if you're sticking with a NA differential. If you elect to go with a TII diffy, then you'll have to change halfshafts.

Stick with the NA diff, they're cheaper and much easier to find. Try to find an LSD diff from a 86-88 GXL's or the 88 GTU.

rx_7_driver 11-15-02 03:06 PM

well i found one from a 90 gtu do they have lsd?

-shawn (i only know shit about my car )

Tony Kerezsi 11-22-02 06:43 PM

I did the same change over and my cruise control does not work and the fog lights to. i have not took the time to work it out yet but if you come up with something let me know thanks

Nope. The only 89-91 cars that had LSD was the Turbo II and GTUs (not GTU) models.

SonicRaT 11-23-02 11:02 AM

It's quite possible that he doesn't have the neutral switch hooked up properly and the car thinks it's in neutral all the time, thus why the cruise won't kick in....

Jimmy325i 11-23-02 11:32 AM

I've got a S4 diff assembly I'll give you for the 3.90 one you've got. God only knows what it'll cost us to swap them. (in shipping)

Anyone know if the diff carriers are different between the 3.90 and the 4.10's? I have an LSD out of a GXL that I'd like to keep but put the taller gears in so I can swap in a close ratio 6 speed.

well to tell you the truth............. i never hooked up the neutral switch, r reverse lights (could never figure out how), when i finish installing it (mechanicly ) i took it for a test drive to check my skills and never put it back in the shop to try to get them to work, cause i wanted to drive the car home and was sick of driving my cousin's alero everywhere, i did put up a thread about the reverse lights and now i think i can hook them up but shop is closed for the holidays and the last week we were there all we did was wax floors so i couldn't do it then, is the nutral switch like the reverse lights??? i thought the cruise didn't work because the auto puter was unpluged....................

Detriuch 11-23-02 01:29 PM

congrats man. i love my 5 spd. i hate drivin my moms auto when the 7 is broken down!!

Jimmy325i 11-23-02 02:20 PM

Since you have access to a hoist the diff swap will take about 2 hours. I'd like to get rid of my extra diff because if you need one I'd like those gears. I'm in no hurry to get them, but would like to have them lined up for when the time comes. I'm not even really sure if 3.90's are gonna be tall enough. (haven't done the math yet)

I'll send you the diff for the cost of shipping plus $20 for packaging. (it'll need a crate) It's yours complete if you want it. Or anyone else for that matter.

SonicRaT 11-23-02 02:49 PM

Well, I'm not quite sure how it'd work, but I imagine it's because it thinks it's in in neutral/park and not in a gear that's causing it not to work properly, check the FSM for both the auto and manual and see what connections there are on the trannies, if the automatic has a neutral switch then just hook it into that.

88 SE 11-23-02 03:24 PM

I beleive the cruise control also hooks into the clutch switch that is on the pedal. Make sure thats connected :D
