5 Beeps on P/S Question?

87' p/s System.

My computer is doing the 5 beeps. I read the faq thread. So I have a speed sensor error. Or steering input is wrong. So my question is how do I fix it?

Is the speed sensor the on the bottom of the pump with 2 wires? I changed it with another one I had from a extra pump I had. Still beeps. Can it be tested? Or should I try a new one? The steering feels and seems to be working ok. What else can I try to fix this? Or how do I fix the 5 beeps error. I just converted to p/s so all these parts are used. Thanks!

5 beeps is a misaligned steering sensor. take off your steering wheel and check to see if the pointer looking disk is aligned correctly.

xzyras 06-24-06 08:26 PM

You know I moved that when I took it off. But I aligned it to the arrow. Where should it point? It was pointing the opposite way. I'll try putting it back. Thanks for the help!

xzyras 06-25-06 02:16 AM

Anyone know how to fix that? Where should the sensor point?

stevie1020 06-25-06 02:28 AM

i would say match up the arrows and see if that works

xzyras 06-25-06 02:31 AM

They already are matched up. Still beeps.

86sport 06-25-06 03:24 AM

The arrows are not supposed to be matched up. I dont remember exactly where the inside arrow goes because I encountered this problem over two years ago. Plus, I'm a little drunk so I'm not all here rigth now. But I know for sure that the arrows dont go aligned.

xzyras 06-25-06 03:52 PM

Any one know where the arrow is supposed to go? Or how to align it?

RotaryEvolution 06-25-06 04:03 PM

http://www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory...CAL_SYSTEM.pdf

on page 15 - 20 there is a test procedure for the steering alignment sensor but i didn't see any alignment procedure.

will be easier to do the tests with the front wheels off the ground.

did the two tabs for the position sensor line up with the holes in the back of the steering wheel or steering wheel hub (if using an aftermarket wheel)?

If the two tabs did not get alinged up with the holes in the wheel/hub, that is where your problem is. You are sandwhiching the tabs and messing up the sensor

xzyras 06-25-06 04:24 PM

They are in the holes. I mean it can only go in 2 ways; with the arrow lined up or with the arrow pointint away. Mine was set with the arrows pointing toward each other. Let me try that test.

Doesn't that sensor also trigger the blinkers to turn off after you turn the wheel? Cause that works fine as well.

Icemark 06-25-06 04:52 PM

sure sounds like the tabs are not in the holes

xzyras 06-25-06 05:53 PM

I just put the steering wheel back on. The tabs where in the holes. Also if they don't go in the holes, the wheel doesn't even go in half way, so I would be able to tell if it was being sandwiched. I put it back on, lined the arrows back up again. the blinkers turn off, and the hub sits all the way in. I think its in the right way. Still beeps. Is there anything else to check?
Would aligning where the rack meets the steering gear matter. I remember I rotated the wheel because it was a bit off, and my steering wheel was crooked. I tried my best to get the rack in with the wheels straight but I guess it moved. But there are no sensors there. But could that affect it?

Could the CPU be bad? I don't have a test light thingy to do that test. I think im going to have to go get one later on and try it.

xzyras 06-25-06 07:33 PM

I was trying to do the test, and it apprears that I do not have an angle sensor. My connector doesn't have the top 3 prongs. I have it on the harness side. I only have the 4 wires coming off the turn signal.

RotaryEvolution 06-26-06 03:52 AM

could be it, i'm not sure if it was integrated into cars not equipped with power steering or not.

yes, it was... the turn signal switch uses it to turn off the signals when a turn is completed.

The wheel will not be held out by the tabs. They simply bend and force the sensor hub too far in. They are simply little plastic tabs... if you were not getting the wheel on far enough, it was unrelated to the tabs.

If the postion/sensor hub is too far in, it will not be read. Effectivly killing the system.

No it's all in the steering column

CPU is unrelated to the position sensor unless you have a 90-91 vert with air bag.

Now the power steering computer could have an issue, but then your turn signals would still turn off. when you turned.

xzyras 06-26-06 03:54 PM

I meant the P/S CPU.

I have that. I don't have the angle sensor wires on the steering column clip though. I only have the 4 wires on the bottom. In the FSM picture is has the other wires coming off the back. 3 of them. I took it all off and I have nothing there. So I think that the manual rack models only came with the turn cancel switch. (or it didn't get wired up) I dunno, but I have no wires where I'm supposed to do the test to check if the sensor works, so I can't check it. I'm going to try and swap one in from a P/S model. Hopefully it has the wires there to send the info to the computer.

I don't know if you knew, but I swapped in the P/S. I had a manual rack, in a base 87' TII. Sorry if I didn't mention that before.

Icemark 06-26-06 04:47 PM

So, there is no position sensor now???

xzyras 06-26-06 07:00 PM

Umm... Im not sure. I mean I have the turn cancel plastic parts. And that has 3 wires, then there is one for the horn but thats it. There are no wires where the angel sensor wires are supposed to be. So how is it supposed to send the reading back to the p/s CPU? Like I said I don't know if its missing a piece or just not wired up. I'll take some pictures and post them up so you can see what I mean.

Here is my Sensor.

There are three wires for the Turn cancel/ position sensor

Green/Black
Green/Yellow
Green/Red

The Horn uses the Green/Orange.

Then the power steering position sensor uses:
Green
Green/White
and
Light Green

They are all in the 8 pin plug, however your 8 pin plug in your picture is missing all the power steering wires (top row of the plug in your bottom picture). I also do not see the pick up in your pictures of the Turn cancel/ position sensor.

xzyras 06-26-06 08:45 PM

Yup, weird right? So I'm going to try and get a whole assembly this week. With all the wires and what ever part those wires go to. Thanks for the help!
