3D Printed FC Cup Holders

Just got my car and felt this was a priority.

It's not perfect (yet), but it's very much functional.

Genius! What did you make the insert out of?

Romthirty 07-11-17 12:17 AM

ABS plastic. 3D Printed.

I had a friend print it in a simple 3D printer, nothing fancy, just so I can test the fitment.

I WILL CLAIM A FREE PROTOTYPE.
Seriously this is great. I would buy.

+1 on that. How much would one of those inserts cost? I'd be interested in buying one. If not I'll go fab up my own, though I doubt it will be as nice

Well... I made this just as a prototype out of necessity, and though I'm a VFX artist and 3D modeler for a Hollywood 3D printing company, I don't actually own my own printer. I had a friend of mine print this on his home printer. I've really been considering purchasing my own printer so I can really fine tune models and potentially sell them. I would hate to sell a model that doesn't look like a polished final product.

If I did go through this and start to sell them, they would be very affordable too!

Let me sleep on this... And yes, I've made note of the people who were first interested

.

This may be a rotary first...someone buys an old FC and their biggest problem is no cup holders.

That looks really good!

Just a recommendation, I made something similar using CAD (Cardboard Assisted Design ;)) and found that it made it awkward to shift when there was a cup in the holder, as my elbow hit it and forced me to contort my arm when shifting into second, fourth, or reverse.

Have you thought of producing something that fits into the front of the center console, replacing the little factory switchboard and AAS switch? LRB speed sells one made of aluminum, but your ABS with raised Rx7 emblems is more appealing to me.

I have seen the metal one that fit in the front but personally felt this was a cleaner and less intrusive method. My design allows for 2 cups, you can still close the console door, and is removable if needed. I experienced a little bit of it getting in the way with 2 cups, but honestly not that bad at all... I'm also not very tall so that may have been why (5'6"). I feel that the other design in the front would totally get in my way with just about any cup size. Also, when shifting, my elbow went over the cup and not off to the side or something, so shifting wasn't too uncomfortable.

Yep! Haha. For being an s4, I lucked out and found one in really good shape. Very few things to repair/replace. I've owned rx7/rx8 before so I knew a little bit of what to look for.

I have also seen the one from lrb, and thought about getting one of those but I like factory look of the switch panel. Now if lrb made an insert out of aluminum for the center console I would probably do that.
Just a couple things that I would be looking for

1. make it removable, how often are you needing a cup holder, for me not very often as its not my daily driver
2. not so worried about the awkward shift as usually if I am the one who is picking up the fast food to bring home, its usually not to far of a drive, so it would be temporary as for the length of time I would use the cup holder
3. for me it doesnt matter the appearance, aluminum plastic etc.

P.S. As for LRB i have vents and inside mirror covers from them and they are great.
