350 hp TII?
 

Hello all. I have a few questions in general. It has been a while since I have worked on Rx-7's. I recently purchased my third. It is a 1990 TII. I want to know realistically is 350-400 hp realistic? I think it is. I was planning on doing the reliablity mods. rebuid the motor with aviation seals, a pretty serious port job, larger injectors, different ignition, port throttle body, new exhaust, larger turbo, front mount intercooler. What esle would I need to do to get in the 350 range? I am set to race a co-worker in the spring. He has a 68 el camino with a 396. The clutch is going out on his and it only runs a 15 s 1/4. I want to be able to beat it even if he gets a new clutch. I have him on weight by quite a bit.

You already run 15's stock.

It's highly recommended to get a stand-alone EMS for those power levels.
The stock ECU just doesn't cut it.

you think the 350 hp range is obtainable by the mods above?

There are a few of us in the 350 power range, and I think all of us are on EMS. Although porting is probably recommended I am doing it on a stock motor (I dont believe in porting). Also, the stock ignition is pretty good, but I am using a Rotary pro-pak.

Awww.. Come on ted! With the exception of EMS and ALCHY thats basically all the mods I got MINUS the porting!!! And I have been DD'ing my car for years!

Okay, I may be missing a few things...;)

We all know a full exhaust (plus supporting fuel mods) will get the FC into the 13's easy!
It'll smoke that big block El Camino which only does 15's no problem! :D

Also, are you looking at 350 fwhp, or actual power to the wheels? There are COUNTLESS threads on achieving 350-400hp, just search. Check out fc3spro.com, and then the mild to wild engine section for step by step info. on obtaining desired levels of horsepower.

Your TII should be able to beat that El Camnio with ease anyway. (I can kill my Dad's 70 Chevelle SS 454 (414hp). Is is an L78 car 396(actually 402ci)/375HP car, or just a regular 396 car? Either way, you should be able to beat him with a full 3" exhaust, intake, and some fuel system modifications. (Injectors, fuel pump, AFPR, fuel computer), and also a boost controller. That coupled with a FMIC, and porting should be more than sufficent to beat the El Camino...if not, just make him follow you into some curves and watch the fun begin....

Lets stop talking about whupping up on people at the track.... My car has run mid 12's at the rack.... but not with me driving it!!!!!! I handed the car over for a race to a guy from baltimore with an FC thats running 11's!!!! my best is low 13's...

REASON??? I'm an old-school V-8 racer who is so goddam used to staging and then hitting the line lick and running the car up agains the TORQUE CONVERTER that this whole let off the E-brake, keep the R's up whill slipping the clutch top keep the boost up with the boost controller on low so the tires don't fry and then hitting the little button on the steering wheel to switch to high boost going tno second really has me be-schnizzled!!!!

It never fails.. I'll cut a 0.02 light and then bog the friggin car out and get a 2.3 60 ft time and run 13.4 @ 105 MPH.... T-bone took one run in my car, and ran 12.6 @ 109 Mph... I suck!!!!!!

lets just sqay the CAR is capable of greatness... the driver, however... thats another story!!!!

BUT... I estimate i'm somewhere around 325 HP..... Never dynoed it.. Mods are in my Sig.. and my car hasn't really given me any fits.. my port job is a RB street port template.. idle is solid, runs smooth at 75MPH on the highway and gots lots of schnit behind it... Its not a daily driver, but, I have no fear of it ouking on me at any second... Then again... I only track it about 5 times a year.. Start racing your car, and thats when shit starts breaking!!!!

IMO.. you can get a 350 HP car and make it VERY reliable with todays equipment. But.. you do have to spend some money... I put about 10K or more into my car... if you try and get those HP numbers on a shoestring budget... you'll be taking the shoe leather express more that you would like!!!!

Also.. think about it.. I put 10K in my car (thats EVERYTHING, not just motor mods) and I spent about 3 on the car... and I'll whip the ass off the great majority of people around here.... i'm talking guys who spent 10K buying the car and then another 10K in mods.... so... when you get right down to it.. its relatively a cheap way to go!!

342 rwhp on a stock motor, BNR stage 4, Alcohol injection, Pump Gas, etc etc.. All done for much less then $10,000 and been street driven for 2 years. Here, just for fun here is the mod list that got me 12.6 @114 MPH:

Wow... J-Rat... I didn't know our cars where that similar....

I got a stage 3 instead of a 4 BNR (but it holds 15 PSI to 7K), a 2.5 DP instead of a 3 and the intakes are street ported on my motor (exhausts are stock), but i aint got no alcohol injection...

But, they both pulled similar times too!!!!!! Thats Whak-Yo!!!!!!!!!

As for less than 10 grand.... I agree WAY less than 10 grand for the HP numbers.....My POWER mods are only about 5-6K of the investment.. Wheels, tires, Shocks, Springs, Stereo, gauges, other junk makes of the rest of the 10K i spent on it!!

(but.. having the Powah, without being able to control it.... is like strapping a rocket on a tricycle... fun.... but you know its gonna burn your ass in the end!!!)

yeah mine is exaclty the same as well but with a stage 3 and no alcohol injection either oh yeah I also have it street ported. Only problem is I have no ems :( just the rtek 1.7 (for timming) 550/890cc injector combo and an safc (for fuel).

I just hit 300whp @ 9psi (at 6000ft altitude, projected HP at sea level is 350-375whp) with a stock ECU and AFM, just an AFC. Maxed out my fuel injectors, but getting it dynoed again tomorrow with much bigger injectors. Going for 16-18psi, should easily make it to 400. I'll post the results tomorrow.

Why do you say that? I have ran 19 psi before on my engine. Oh wait.. Stock ECU.. Muh bad..

Yep, my 342 was at 3000 ft above sea level. So my sea level power will be a bit greater.
