2nd Gen RX7 Subwoofer systems
 

alright now, i posted about 4-5 days ago about an audio system in the FC.

I would like to see what others have done for thier settup.

This is what I plan on doing for my rx.

It took me a weekend to build and install it, plus it only weighs 38 lbs :D

The old 7 I used to ride around in just had a 12" sitting up against the window, lol.

I have a 8" Bazooka Tube mounted behind my driver's seat on the floor. Only possible because of my bucket seat.

eclipse head unit
boston components in front (came with car, still sound decent)
jl audio coaxials in rear towers
kenwood self powered bass tube w/ 10" woofer

the woofer is held down by a quick release strap and plugs in with multi-pin connector and rca cables, so i can easily remove it for auto-x events.

i'm thinking of doing something similar to that only with 2 12" subs angled forward at maybe 45' and out partly out of fiberglass

Well I prefer the stereo to be as inconspicuous as possible when viewed from the outside. I had two 10" subs in the storage bins with the amp behind the passenger seat, covered by the carpet. You couldn't see it from the outside and it sounded pretty good. IMHO having visible subs/sub boxes is an invitation to theives, and isnt' worth doing.

I had to remove one sub to put the battery back there, but I've since taken out the other sub and amp before the last track day (stupid amp stopped working).

Especially if there's problems with auto crime in your area, keep it as stock looking as possible. Having broken windows and a stolen stereo will ruin your day.

haha, theres a small problem with that here, lituraly not big enough to worry about. i know of one person off hand that would even dare do that and he knows he'd get a shotgun in the face hahaha. other then that, if i have to, i'll park in a freakin storage unit.

Well you may end up moving one day. Where my parents live it's pretty good, but in the lower mainland here where I go to University there's some areas that are pretty bad (Surrey for instance is amongst the worst in North America). One of my freinds had his car broken into twice in a year and a half. The first time they got the stock 1989(?) Civic stero, the second time they didn't get anything because the stereo hadn't been replaced.

the only issue I found that is if you have a lot of power to the speakers, the bass is literally deafening if it's angled. The way I have it the main bass hits the roof and disperses so you get a lot better overall sound.

i used to have 2 12"s in a geo metro convertible, i don't think it's gonna be that big a deal

Hah, i may no almost nothing about the RX7 other then the fact that they are freakin GREAT for drifting with thier limitless rotary, but when it comes to audio, i'm a genius. Bass is omni directional no matter what position you have the subwoofer or what angle you have it. if the angle you ahve it is closure to you'e head then it is when it's near the rear end, ya you'r gona hear a SPL diffrence, but thats only the direct raditing spread. when it comes to the whole car it's self, the SPL is the same no matter what unless you have whats known as cold and hot spots where the bass wave incounter each other and either amplify them selfs or cancel them selfs out.

i will most likely have to angle my subs. the JBL W12GTi, along with the other GTi subwoofers, is ment for reverse mount applications and is rather long. a 12" sized sub with nearly a foot long motor structure. Great for showing off, but hard to design around.

Yeah, I would never have visible stereo components around here. I had a friend that had 3 GPS units stolen out of his car in 6 months. He got them all covered on his insurance, though. Hell, some dipshit even tried to steal the stock radio from my wife's Geo.
As for the guy with the eclipse head unit - lucky! I used to have an eclipse, and it was my favorite stereo I've ever had. Unfortunately, when I bought my 7 if already had a nice stereo in it, so I let my brother have the eclipse. Now its acting weird but he wont give me my eclipse back. Oh well.

Anyone have any experience with the Infinity Basslink or Infinity Basslink II thinking of picking up the II but its 90 dollars more. Is 50 watts worth that much and make that big of a difference?

mines pretty simple, but it works great plus when i pull the rear carpet back up you don't even know anything is back there. I have the amp mounted behind the passenger seat and all the cables run under the carpet so it looks clean. And yes that is a box back there that we built with some funky angles to give me the air space i needed for the sub to work.

i'm not really worried about anything happening to my system. i'm just looking for some good shots of a custom dual 12" or daul 15" settup in a RX7. i've been looking for lituraly a month and found nothing. i'm trying to see if my settup is infact plossible to do without hassel before i make my decision.

I going to try and hide a ducted sub, in the storage bing frame, id like to have both bins still useable

though it sounds like a good idea, it's really a bad idea. if the subwoofer isn't ment for free air then i wouldn't do it, you'l end up spending more moeny down the road replacing them after they've blown from overexcursion.

It is difficult to put a sub in a bin and make it sound good. either mdf or fiberglass (many layers), not to mention the weight it adds. i have had countless setups in my car over the last few years, and i have opted for what's called an infinity basslink (250rms watt monoblock amplifier built into a small lightweight enclosure containing one 10" sub and opposite that a 10" passive radiator) The sound is quality, it only weighs.. maybe 10 pounds.. and it is very small. downside: it won't due if what you really want is two 15s to listen to DMX, or whatever the kids listen to nowadays.

i myslef have tried many ways to get the best sound out of a sub in an rx7 and the best way ive found so far is a box between the back speaker containers facing the back diagonaly like /_| <-- kinda like so that is the best way ive gotten sound out of a sub. making a bin into a sub box is pointless. they soudn like shit and you get piss poor quality out of them. even placing them where the bins are even at or were. best to have them in the back pointing to the back. that is were you get the best bass from in a 7

Sub in the back like in the pic = no spare tire = you're screwed if you get a flat.

Sub + enclosed airspace in the storage bin area + useful storage bin room = not happening. You can barely fit the subs themselves in there.
