245's or 255's on 17x8 mustang rear wheels?
 

I just won some mustang gt wheels and I'm going to need some tires for them. So far I'm decided on 225/45r17 for the front but I want something wider for the rear. I read some people using 255/40r17 on the 8 inch rim but most of the tire companies don't recomend putting them on anything smaller than 8.5 in rim. So what should it be 245's or 255's, I like to do alot of hard driving and go to the quarter mile track every once in awhile.

They are going to go on a set of mustang gt five spoke wheels that have a 30 offset.

Im running 255/40r17s out back and 235/40r17s up front. Tires are close up front, you will be fine with the 225s. The 255/40r17 fits the wheel very nice IMO. Here are some pics in a recent thread of mine:

Just to warn you, when I first posted pictures of my GT wheels on my car, I actually had a couple people PM me telling me how stupid I was, and if they ever saw me they'd "kick my ass" for doing something as stupid as putting mustang wheels on a Rx-7. Dont you love maturity? :p:

I saw your pics before thats why I wanted to get the mustang wheels, I have the same color car to. I just couldn't get the stupid search to work for me. A few hundred bucks for some 17x8's, Hell there's nothing wrong with that, its not like I'm putting a ford motor into it.

I just have to find some decent 255/40's now.

Oh and do you know if I can get some center cap blanks for the wheels?

I havent been able to find any blank center caps. Ive actually seen them before, but Ive called numerous companies and wheel distributors, and they told me they do not exist. I am in the process of sanding mine down and painting them now, Ill post some pics when Im done. As for tires, Im running Kumho Ecsta Supra 712s, and they cost me about $440 after shipping from tirerack. Not too bad , and they seem like really nice tires. These is the only side-shots I have at the moment:

You're splitting hairs agonizing over 245 vs 255 unless you have 300+rwhp. Going wider in back than front increases understeer, so if you like to do hard driving on the edge of traction, you might need to soften up your front struts and dial in more stiff on the rears to compensate for it and balance out the handling.

Would getting a thicker rear sway bar help with understeer and leave the front sway bar stock.

Yes. That is another good option for correcting understeer. I did that to my FC.

What bar did you go with?

I've got 255 wides on 17x7 Enkeis in the rear. Mad traction. I love it.

Thats really way too much tire for a 7" wide wheel. You may actually gain some usable contact patch going down to 235s. You have any pics from the side of what that looks like?

I kept the base model bar in front and swapped in a GXL bar in the back. If I had more $ I would order the Racing Beat springs and anti-sway bar set for ~$475, but I've got other uses for five hundred bucks right now. ;)

And 88IntegraLS, I willl be making 300+ rwhp, so thats the reason for the wider tires out back. I wouldve never sold my 'vert wheels if I wasnt going turbo.. I miss them :tear:

I agree, for better handling balance try to keep the same size tires all the way around.

Thanks, and yes, I would definatly slap some 245+ rears on if I had any kind of power coming out of my NA, but well, you guys know how it goes. NAs are nice and all, but they're only fast "in the twisties". I guess I could always fab up a supercharger system . . that seems to be the new fad with NAs. :D

I miss my vert rims too, and my N/a's handling and fireballs. Man all of us n/a guys are going turbo. I plan on getting some wider tires on the AE, since its making up to 400rwhp. Thats the only reason why I am planning on staggering my tire size.

I don't want to hijack the thread or anything, but I'm wondering about wheel sizes. I was wondering if I could run 245/45/16 or 265/35/17 out back and 225/50/16s up front without significant rubbing. I won't only be driving this car on the street, I'll also be autocrossing it, so there's more body roll involved there. I have Eibach swaybars and front and rear strut tower bars, but I don't know if they would keep the car flat enough to prevent serious rubbing. The car's stance is lowered an inch all around.

225/50/15 is really close to the spring. Some tires will rub, some wont. I have 225/50/15s Yokohama ES100s on my n/a, and it is very close. Running a 16" rim could help. If it doesn't work, you could get some spacers to make it work.
