245 Tires in Front - Steering Effort?
Does anyone have experience using 245 tires up front in with a manual steering rack? If so, what is the steering effort like? I found a surprising increase in steering effort going from 205 to 225s. I'm concerned about the steering being too tough and reducing my accuracy and quickness on tight turns (eg. think autoX).
Thanks. (I already asked this question in the suspension forum, but received no responses) |
I'm not a very experienced auto-xer (2 events so far), but I didn't have any problems turning the wheel with my 245s. I'm using whatever tires come on the 17"x8" mustang rims, size 245/45 17. I also daily drive with these, and don't find it difficult.

My friend Jason (sesshoumaru on the forums) has 245's up front with a manual rack. I've driven it a few times and its not bad at all. I doubt you'll notice much of a difference from the 225's you have now. Then again, i've never driven his with anything but his 245's..

I've got 245/40's up front with a manual rack and have autocrossed it about 5 times with this set up (a few were with 245/45's) but it has yet to bother me, even while parallel parking. My girlfriend gripes about it at low speed and when stopped but I don't think it's bad.

Sounds pretty good, you guys are making me feel better about this. Has anyone gone from 225s to 245s and if so can you comment on the difference?

Get bigger arms...Just talk to Jose Canseco

Lol. If you're using your "big" arm muscles, you're not as accurate as if you're using your hands and wrists. That's why steering effort is a concern.

tell you what, you can drive my talon around for a week, and after that you'll be AMAZED how light your fc steering is!
I've got 225 stickies all around on my 10AE now, power rack, pump in place but no belt on the pump (just havent pulled it yet) and it's SOO easy compared to the talon with 205 winter tires... |
