230 whp Supercharged Vert Complete! Dyno and In-Car Video and SC Comparisons

My supercharged Vert is finally complete. It made 230 whp on the dyno which is a 65 whp increase with only 6 psi. Here is a comparison of several different supercharged FC dyno charts that I have plotted on top of each other.

http://www.alantripp.com/fcsuperchargercomparisons.jpg

Here is a video I made with some crappy nighttime footage (to get the sound experience) and the dyno pull (done in 3rd gear):

Right Click, Save As...

I am the third owner of this supercharger kit. The original owner was Travis Shrey who has (had?) a sweet red Vert that I used to have on my desktop. It's strange that I ended up with his exact supercharger kit.

These Paxton superchargers are still used by some of the Mustang guys. A relatively cheap (<$1k) rebuild/upgrade exists that allows the supercharger to flow 1400 cfm (up from 800 cfm in a freshly rebuilt SC like mine); however, it does make the unit a little bit deeper, so I'm not sure if it will fit without doing some notching of both the supercharger and the intake manifold. Because this project ended up costing me a bit more than I expected, I'll probably jump in for another $1k or so and try to break 300 whp with some type of supercharger upgrade.

Mods to the FC:
Rebuilt S5 Motor with very mild streetport
Port-matched/polished manifolds
Full Racing Beat Exhaust (no header, exhaust manifold then full RB)
K&N Filter with heatshielding
S-AFC II
550 cc secondaries
FD fuel pump
Aeromotive FPR
Cooling Mist water injection (still tweaking)
ACT Clutch (not sure which one)
Racing Beat Lightweight Steel Flywheel
Nelson/Paxton SN89 Centrifugal Supercharger @ 6 psi (max until rebuild/upgrade)
Greddy Type RS BOV

FUGGIN NICE! i like it man, ALOT! sounds bad ass, who makes the mounts to get that on there? i might be interested in trying something like this. :D

Funkspectrum 06-06-05 11:30 PM

damn dood....good job! :bigthumb:

Jager 06-07-05 12:17 AM

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but is it the old Paxton kit or just the same supercharger tweaked into a kit (custom)?

staticguitar313 06-07-05 12:59 AM

that sounds mean, almost like a fucking jet or something, good job man thats a sweet setup.

Cobra_R 06-07-05 01:40 AM

yea, thats awesome, more info on how it was done please!!!!!!!!! lol.

easymmkay240sx 06-07-05 01:59 AM

definately! more info please!

NICE, good work man; "Something thats different" thats got to hall ass.

SideWindeRx7 06-07-05 03:24 AM

might want to check out that engine light! :-p

lol.. nice work man, it looks good!

check light = NA pressure sensor going nutty in boost? and nice numbers for only 6lbs :bigthumb:

RETed 06-07-05 04:44 AM

And how much did this all cost?

that sounds ballzy makes me wish ill held out for a sc

Mura 06-07-05 06:38 AM

I love you man. You've done something that I've been wanting to do. And 230hp is damn good enough for me. You must give me more on the setup, price, etc....

Too much. :p:

I would just like to say that I realize that this was not the most cost-effective way to get to 230 whp. The kit was not exactly a "bolt-on" installation and required modifying the secondary fuel rail and numerous other fitment-related issues. The alternator pulley was also wobbling which required some machining. I did not install this myself, so I had to also pay for labor.

I bought the used supercharger kit with a nearly-new ACT clutch for $1500.
I have a feeling the car is still running quite rich, but the dyno did not log my AFRs for some reason (realized after the fact).

I'll just say that my total investment in the FC is over $12k.

I got your PM. I added you to my buddy list, but you haven't been online and not away when I've been online.

Yeah, I want to do some flyby vids. I'll use my friend's HD video camera for those.

Yep. CEL throws a few codes related to sensors. Nothing to be concerned about.

SonicRaT 06-07-05 09:06 AM

Yeah, centrifugal blowers have their place on a rotary. Are you intercooling it at all? I wish paxton/etc had flow-maps available.

SureShot 06-07-05 09:22 AM

Very nice setup.
I know that vert's got to be a blast to sport around in.
You didn't show the daily driving fun part - the torque from 2K to 4K.
That' where the SC shines before turbo's really get going.

My setup is kind of in between a SC & a big turbo.
It's a turbo from a J-spec automatic.
Its smaller compressor spools sooner, but without the top end of the stock turbo.

Actually, the centrifugal supercharger does not produce any power down low. It builds boost exponentially in relation to RPM. Actually, the supercharger probably robs enough power beneath 3k RPM that an equal car without the supercharger would make a bit more power beneath 3k RPM. A twin screw blower would be the best compromise for supercharger a rotary. I believe it was SonicRat that installed one on an FC.

SonicRat, do you have a dyno chart available? I'd like to put it on my FC supercharger comparison chart.

kontakt 06-07-05 10:27 AM

I was just reading another S/C thread, I believe SonicRat got 270 rwhp out of an M90 (t-bird) air-water cooled, and more than plenty of other money spent. he said past 270 it just blew heat.

No intercooling. I am running a water injection kit; however, I'm not sure how well it is working because I think my sensor for my Air Intake Temp gauge is getting extremely heatsoaked. My mechanic put it in the stock location in the manifolds and moved the stock sensor up into the elbow. I think I'm going to move the aftermarket sensor up next to the factory sensor and block off the factory location.

We did not pull any timing from the CAS, and there are no signs of detonation.

Tournapart 06-07-05 11:28 AM

nice sleeper man

88IntegraLS 06-07-05 11:29 AM

Superchargers are always going to be more expensive than turbos considering the TII is factory made and oh so cheap to modify if you follow instructions.

FWIW I'll have less than a grand dumped into my own twin screw millenia S supercharger project (FMIC, Megasquirt, TII tranny) when all is said and done, and a bit of self done fabbing.

Supercharging is harder than modding a TII. But that's not the point, nor is its relative frugality or lack therof.
