2013 New smog laws. What exactly changes for us OBDI users

This is what I am talking about.
SmogTips.com - AB 2289 - Smog Check Law California. No more tailpipe smog test. Elimination of tailpipe smog check testing for 2000 model vehicles and newer.
.

I can tell from reading this that OBD II no longer have to do the dyno test. But what about us? I am going to assume that nothing has changed with the way we are tested but I just want to make sure before I get all freaked out. I know that some of us here in CA already have a hard time passing smog/test only centers.

I love living in northern Ontario. I've never had any smog/emission tests. We can drive around with test pipes all day.

Lucky. :(

as far as i know, nothing changes for the older than y2k crowd, which is ok

Jackintheb0x214 11-30-12 11:19 PM

KS doesnt have smog requirements either. Ive never owned a car/truck with a cat and one of my trucks was straight piped...its great

epic 12-01-12 03:00 PM

Dam. I need to find someone trust worthy to register my car in a state where they don't smog.

Jackintheb0x214 12-02-12 10:55 AM

I did that with a cousin who lived in MO.

my friend took his smog cert update class and he says nothing changes until september, so registering a car out of state looks like a great idea. its going to be less money and less hassle

Just find a place that passes you.. For 150 I can drive around with headers and no cat

epic 12-02-12 05:27 PM

It's hard to find a place that will "pass" you. Some of the owners are just worried about getting busted and I don't blame them.

they are supposedly putting cameras and stuff in the smog shops, so this is going to get harder

Dam that big brother....

i know, hopefully when they go to buy the cameras the credit card gets declined, they really don't have the money to do it, and they aren't gonna catch anyone either

epic 12-05-12 10:58 AM

So update,

I got my smog test only done. Yippy!!! but, i was talking to the guy who owns the shop and he told me that they are not putting cameras in the shop really. What they are going to do and have been doing for some time now, is putting cameras in a car and sending a undercover smog inspector to test the owners/workers at the test only centers.

Just pay the Mexicans to pass it for you.

Justamk4 01-11-14 12:47 PM

It's not worth it to modified these cars in California anymore. 16sec cars will now be 16sec cars

Or be smarter about the modifications you do.

yep

i used to have to deal with the cali nazis, most people would just do it under the table. the rest would pay extra to make the car appear to be smog legal but just shy of not, but still able to pass. in most cases that is all that truly matters, unless you find a smog tech who just can't handle any aftermarket parts at all.

a pfc nicely hidden in the OE location does just the job, the rest is easily hidden except the exhaust and they can't fail you for having a modified exhaust system.

but then again, he must be extremely paranoid to dig up the thread.

They tried cameras here, didnt do shit, lol

beefhole 01-11-14 07:24 PM

I've said it before, CA is pretty stupid with these emissions laws. The state has SO MANY financial issues, and they still manage to go after 25+ year old cars.

Even NY doesn't do the roller/sniffer test for a few years now. I can't fart without being taxed on it here in NY, but at least they don't piss away resources on ancient car testing.

Tui 01-11-14 08:48 PM

It used to be a rolling 25 year window, but the Governator f'd that up for what ever reason was whispered into his ear. Otherwise almost all 1st Gens would be exempt as of this year.

I hope they get a bad case of termites....and may they never recover.

Same where I'm at. I runaround with 3'' straight . Only even been warned for noise once in 2 years

SDrotary-FC 01-11-14 11:14 PM

If you live out in the country side we still to the ol tail pipe sniffer which is easier to pass....it usedto be if you live in a town with less than 500 people u didnt have to smog...dont know if that still works though
