20 psi on modded stock turbo with mods. Possible?

My friend told me his cousin my modified the stock turbo to run 20 psi on his 87 t2. Is this possible?

He claims he saw it push this much boost. The car was a half bridge running 3" exhaust.

Not sure of other mods but was told the car was close to 400whp and capable of running 11's

If the turbo's been modified, it's not stock.

wthdidusay82 01-05-13 05:40 PM

By stock I'm saying its the turbo that came on the car, obviously it'd need to be modified.

Unmodified it's efficient to only 12psi

Yes. I've put my stock turbo through 20+ psi accidentally. It's not a smart move, but it is possible. After about 12 psi on the stock HT18, you're no longer in the efficiency range for that turbo. So all you're doing is pumping a lot of heat at a higher pressure. That will raise the intake temperatures to a dangerous level. You won't make any decent power at that point though, and you're risking severe detonation from the higher intake temperature. It's just not worth it.

I have my T04B hybrid turbo turned up to 15 psi, and that's as high as I'm comfortable with.

Are you referring to a hybrid turbo when you mean "modified stock"?

wthdidusay82 01-05-13 06:43 PM

I'm not sure, my friend said he saw his cousin's stock Turbo pushing 20+ psi.

It had to be clipped and modified in some way, possibly a hybrid.

All I know is from the stories I heard the car blew 3 foot flames and could spin 3rd gear.

Obviously must of been running rich, but it had to have a lot of power.

The car was sold to another friend of mine after it was modified , that friend died of cancer, now his younger brother has it as it was passed down to him and its been sitting in a garage in memory of his loss for 10+ years.

I keep telling him to work on it, but he never does.

Blowing flames and spinning tires can be done by a geo metro. That's not really any indication of power.

I could blow flames and spin tires on the stock turbo as well, but that was because I had a piss-poor tune and slick tires.

Well I've never had a car that could spin 3rd gear, not even in the rain.

I'm just saying this car was a beast when it ran.

Most I've seen is 16psi on a stage4 bnr.

ive seen 15 out of mine, but my engine is ported.

t2Maniac 01-05-13 07:40 PM

I've hit 17 before, but that was because my wastegate lacked flow and I coulda popped the motor quick. I did the shaving mod, smoothed the boost out a whole lot to a steady 7-9psi, but for pushing more than 12 out of the stock turbo, it's just risking your motor severely. Get a turbo setup if you want more power, let the ht18 stay stock.
I'll be posting a turbo upgrade soon with a t4 gt35r on my fc.

Im sorta New to Rotarys > No more than 12psi

I just blew my 13b.. the intake temps got too hot from runnin g a stock TMIC and pushing 15psi on a completely stock turbo... Take care of your engine... or youll be with out a car for a while.. Only had my FC for 6 months... smh..

I'm planning on running 12 psi max on my stock turbo, I was just curious as to what its capable of when modified.

"Modified" can mean a lot of things. On hybrids with compressors that are efficient at high pressures (above ~1 bar/15 psi), 360 degree thrust bearings are advised for reliability/longevity.

wthdidusay82 01-06-13 06:21 PM

I don't really know much about turbos, I've still got a lot to learn, that's why I'm keeping the turbo stock for a while.

I don't think I'll need more than 15psi to get 300whp, if I do upgrade I'll probably get a stage 1 or 2 bnr.

K-Tune 01-06-13 06:48 PM

300whp isn't attainable on a completely stock turbo, no matter what psi it's pushing.

Spinning shitty tires in 3rd is easy with less than 300whp, and N/A rx-7s with 130whp can shoot 4 foot flames. Seems like you can't tell when someone is blowing smoke up your ass.

Are there any dyno plots or time slips from the car? If not you have no reason to believe it was any faster than a stock RX-7.

Its info from a friend I've had for 15 years.

you think 300 horse is possible with a big a** front mount? stock turbo?

No.

The only way to get over 300whp with a stock turbo is with nitrous oxide.

jimmydanny 01-06-13 10:15 PM

Well, a BNR with a sanded exhaust housing do look exactly like a stock turbo. Or with the black exhaust housing it looks like a stock turbo that has been painted. Badum-tish

midnightbluefc 01-17-13 06:51 PM

lol 17psi? i get scarred wehen i see 12 psi, lol. and 300 hp on stock turbo not likely, a hybrid turbo can get you there

My5ABaby 01-21-13 05:31 PM

As RotaryRocket88 said, modified can mean a lot. A completely stock turbo can probably see 20psi, but there's no point. There's not much point to go over 12psi. They're just not made for it. Now a modified turbo is a whole new world. Check out BNRs site.
