1st Post Here ....
Well i wanna say hello to all the other forum members and ask one heck of a opinionated drawn out question =)
i have a 89gxl rx7. i purchased it with 65k miles on it.. fortunatlely from an old lady so it was never ever beaten on. unfortunately it was an N/A so i needed the most bang for the buck as i was shy on cash from just purchasing the car so i couldnt afford 8k in upgrades to make it 13 second worthy. I purchased a zex nitrous kit and had the honor of blowing the motor about a week after i purchased the car. now im back up to about 2000-2500 bucks to spend and im stuck between... buying a rebuilt 13b and putting it in. Buying a t2 motor and putting it in /doing the conversion. or puttting a good old 302 in? any input ? also as far as the conversions go i have a million questions.. going carbeurated 302 would probably be easier id think and cheaper ? yes/no ? but id really like to stick with a rotory motor.. and id love to go with a turbo 2 motor. Would a turbo 2 motor function ok without the hoodscoop from a t2 car ? also what would it cost to do the conversion approximately ? i mean what would i need besides what ever is salvageable on my car ? new ecu ? new tranny or is it the same ? new harness ? anyone done one of these conversions before ? or know of a link that explains it ? i plan on having it done this summer and i know i can pull the motor within days. i just dont know what doing either conversion entails but its much more cost efficient (horsepower to dollar) wise to do a conversoin then to just replace another 13b N/A id think. Plus its much easier to upgrade a T2 then a N/A. I konw this is a long drawn out post and it would take someone a decent amount of time but id really apprecaite some feedback/help. Also there was a guy in MI that posted here awhile back that has a shop that was doing conversions... anyone know his name ? thanks ahead of time..... |
ah crap the NA guys are going to get pissed again :) The turbo wouldn't last very long without the scoop hood, the intercooled wouldn't get enough fresh air. If you go with a 302, it is also suggested that this be your last post on THIS forum :)
|
hehe, i figured that ... from what ive read a 302 only makes 235hp which a t2 i belive is 205 ? correct me if im wrong ?
ok so now i konw if i go with the turbo 2 conversion i need a turbo 2 hood... i plan on getting the paint redone anyways =) |
yikes while im at it .. anyone selling a T2 motor ? complete ? or know of a site thats decent with pricing ?
|
A 302? If you're really going to drop a V8 in there, at least pick a better V8. :D
It depends on what you want this car to be. If you'd really like to stick with a rotary, but need more power, you can either do the conversion to your car (I suggest you start using the search feature ;) ), or you can sell that one and buy a running TII. |
yea i thought about parting it out also... what is a motor like that worth roughly parted out ? assuming it is in flawless condition and had 66k on it a week before i bought it.. i put about 500 miles on it tops before i poofed it with a 75shot..... and assuming i blew everything blowable w/ n20... i only payed 2700 for the car but if i can get near that back parting it out then i will purchase another t2. and i chose a 302 conversion because i was told it was an easy switch and kits were made for the conversion. also anything bigger would require cutting ect that im not prepared to do =(
so its either pay for a rebuild or swap.. or do it myself into a T2 which now i realize will require a new hood which adds another 500 or so .... whattdya think ? =) |
Search for information on converting a n/a car to turbo. You don't need a TII hood, but you will need a FMIC. By the way, you can get a TII engine for $1000 on www.fc3s.org or www.corksport.com...they're called J-Spec. ;)
|
it can't be done within a reasonable price ragns.
I tried to find the parts. you need a t2 ecu for an 89 turbo II. This is not possibel to find. Mazmart, Mazda recycling, and FCS3 and corksport did not have them when I called and told me good luck finding one. The best to do they said"find a junk tII and use the parts from it. You need ECU,Wiring harness, soleniod, maf sensor, And MOST IMPORTANTLY KNOWLEDGE. try repairing your N/A and getting it ported and such. I personally would love to go with a 351. the blue oval is always First On Race Day if you still want the 302 go with a 289 stroked out to as 347, it is an old motor out of a 65mustang adn can be purchesed for dirt. I have a mustang and have a ton of hp. Good thing about it is no electronic BS to get in your way. well good luck if you decide to part it out I need the shifter cover and the side air vents on the dash. |
How bout
Found On Road Dead ???? |
In my opinion, I think it's actually easier to put a TII turbo on an N/A motor.
There is a tiny bit of fabbin invoved (a simple 2 pipe manifold spacer- no bends) and oil and coolant lines- but that's it. ALSO- Just get bigger injectors, maybe a fuel computer if you want, and that will give you a fully tunable, swwet steet setup Please intercool if going for more than stock boost though!!! |
the above might work if you are willing to pay for the fuel managment system. I still think the way to go is sell it and get a tII from somewhere else. Since you put Nitrous on it I am assuming that you want straight line performance. and as ALL true muscle car fans know "THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT"
|
Sounds like you want something fast ..... go with the TII ... It will be a lot of work but I'm sure the end results will be worth it!

i told him to fix the one he's got it looks just like the pic in his avitar, round taillights and all,has some minor rust on the passenger side, interior is so clean that you would think it just rolled off the line, the interior even smells like it,will have pics on the michigan sevensport club site soon,
anyway,i think the best thing to do would be find a just rebuilt street ported or bridgeported engine from thepartstrader.com then put his old acc on the new engine, because his old acc are in mint conditon, then rip down the left overs and sell to make some money back, partyguy is from a neighborhood of v8 lovers,he lives one city over from me,we dont have many rx7's around here so im asking the people of this forum to school my young compadre in the ways of the rx7,welcome him to the dark side of the force oh he really didnt mean that crack about the v8 conversion, anyone knows a v8 will make your rx really front end heavy, also a v8 churning out 350 hp could touch a rotary pumping out 250,its all about the weight, drive wheel torque = flywheel torque x first gear x final drive x 0.85 wheel thrust = drive wheel torque / rolling radius g = wheel thrust / weight weight transfer = weight x cg height / wheelbase x g lateral acceleration = 1.227 x raduis / time^2 lateral weight transfer = weight x cg height / wheel track x g centrufugal force = weight x g Formulas for shift points rpm after shift = ratio shift into / ratio shift from x rpm before shift drivehsaft torque = flywheel torque x transmission ratio |
350hp no no.
$2000 on the rx7 = 275hp $1879.47 on a 72 camaro = 649hp I've given up the quarter mile for more skill "Autocross". |
Faulty
Old Rebuilt Dodge |
$3,000 on rx7 = camden super @ 15psi = 350 + hp = 12 sec or better 1/4 mile,
|
I like the rx but not as a dragster. It is just not set up to perform in this manner. Independent rear will not hold the torque that a straight axel will. And I have even snapped them(staights) before.
what did you have to do to go super charged? |
If you run a FMIC you can keep your flat hood.
|
A FMIC is for a turbo isn't it. I thought he was talking about a supercharger.

I thought he was talking about a supercharger. yes i am talking a bout a super, did you just get into rotary's?go here http://www.camdensuperchargers.com there for rx7's,you can get a 7" good for 15psi of boost, average hp gain @ 10-12 psi is said to be 50% you can do the math @15 psi,not to mention if you have header and exhaust etc, then you would have to start your math all over agin, because its a percentage gain not a hp figure gain. |

Get a Street Ported NA motor. Good power and pretty cheap to do. Thats my $.02.
|
Where was Mazda on Sunday? I was looking for them in the winners circle at North Carolina. And the Sunday before that at Daytona. How about next Sunday?
ONLY KIDDING GUYS. Yes I too am new to rotories and will still be needing plenty of your help. Have any of you been able to help Partyguy1214 find the parts mainly the ECU and wiring harness? I sill can't find them. |
