1990 rx7 TII doesnt start

hi guys, last night i was on my way home from work and got about 4 miles and my car started smoking from under the hood. the smoke was a light blue or just like a cigerette smoke color. i pulled over, opened the hood and smoke rised. i checked everthing over, oil, coolant and such and everything looked ok. my brother came and said he thought it smelt like exhaust and thought my exhaust manifold cracked more( it already had been cracked so thinking it got worse) and was pooring exhaust out the hole. and thats where it looked like the smoke was coming from kindd of. so we got in the car and were going to get my other car and on the way we thought maybe it smelt like electrical so we pulled over and looked under the hood and found nothing. continued on to the shop and when we got there it was smoking a lot. my brother got out and looked under the hood, told me to shut it off and said maybe the seals went out in the turbo causing oil to leake on the exhaust mani. i went to start the car back up and it fired twice and shut off and now it doesnt start. the starter doesnt even make any noise, and the power windows dont work??? we tryed to pop the clutch in reverse and nothing happened. everything else works like headlights, cig lighter, inside lights, brake lights, wipers. any ideas? it is a quart low on oil from last week when i checked it. anyone have any ideas??? anything ha??? i know its gunna be hard cause we are not sure what it really smelled like. but it smoked a lot so i dont know how it could be electrical and smoke that much but not be able to see anything visable?? OIL RINGS?? Thanks guys!!! im lost with this one!! anyone in Minnesota have sometime to spar this weekend and would want to come take a look at it? i will pay for your gays and stuff! just wanna get this fixed before i store it away for the winter...

find out why it was smoking, thats where i would start... oil rings? as in piston rings? lol oh boy... and youll pay for gays? might wanna keep that to yourself

RX7-TII 10-16-12 10:22 PM

what? the oil control rings... maybe you should check on that.. and yes i pay for gays.. or i meant pay for gas.

rx7_FREAKKK 10-16-12 10:48 PM

I cant read all that crazy mess. My eyes are killling me..

Just check all fluids make sure you have oil pressure, make sure your rad lines are ok. Check UIM Heater hoses. Check oil cooler lines.

whats jumbed? and its just a paragraph? do i need to double space things? i'm thinking oil control rings. just looking for help. dont really need anyone to bust my balls about a paragraph or a typo.

First of all, the starter not turning & the windows not operating say you have electrical problems. I would check fuses in the Driver's kick panel AND the fuses in the short black plastic panel on the driver's side under the hood, with the big "80A" label on top. There are relays there as well, I'm not sure what went. I would also check starter wiring and alternator wiring.

Secondly, if it's oil control rings, that would be a rebuild. Sorry for that news. BUT it is totally worth checking the turbo first, even if it's not leaking externally (you'd have to take it off then).

The starting and oil problems may not be related. Search the forums for tests for the turbo and oil control rings, and the starter. You might also try hotwiring the starter, I had to do that on a Z.

Somebody else may have even better advice, but honestly that first post makes your eyes hurt.

Good luck. I'd start with electrics and then get under and look around the turbo for oil. And examine the manifold while you're at it.

With respect to the window problem, have you checked the Window fuse?

Turblown 10-17-12 07:46 PM

Where are you located?

RX7-TII 10-17-12 08:53 PM

hey guys, sorry about the big long paragraph with no spaces haha. Merovign thank you for the reply! good info and ideas. I hoping tomorrow i will get to start working on her, so i will have an update tomorrow.

Satch- I did check the fuses in the kick panel but it was dark out and i didnt have a test light so anything is possible. fuses will be the first thing i start with. Thank you!

Turblown - im located in st cloud mn. about a hour and a half from the cities. is there any reason you would happen to need to come to st cloud anytime soon ha? with help from the forum and good info i should be ok (big should) ha. thanks you guys!!

ok so went and picked the car up on a flat bed today. remember when i left the car the power windows did not work and did not crank over. not even any sound came from the starter.

the window was open so i was gunna try the P.W and they roled up so i tried to crank it a little bit and it crank over and started. i only let it run for 5 seconds. i pulled the TMIC and there is a pool of coolant on top of the lower intake mani (i think??) straight down from the injectors.

Any ideas when this coolant is coming from?? Thanks guys

There's only a heater hose going to the firewall and a water hose connecting the engine with the throttle body which is under the upper intake manifold i can think of at the moment. Are you using yellow coolant? Looks a bit strange to me. Yo might also check if the coolant is maybe not coolant but gas. It's a quite common failure that the pulsation damper at the fuel rail breaks.

I think the fluid shorted out a connector and after letting it stay it dried again.

That's not gas, that's coolant. Your LIM O-ring(s) failed. It is coming out top and most likely bottom dripping on the manifold. However you did say it smelled like oil and was blue. Coolant would be white and smell sweet.... So maybe this is another issue you found.

You have to take the LIM off and replace the o-rings, it's a decent amount of work. But while you're at it you'll have time to look at other things.
