1990 gxl just stopped running

So i was on the freeway about a couple of months ago with some of my fc buddies and we were doign about 80mph. When they started to accelerate away i dropped down a gear to catch up but once my car got upto 100mph it stopped pulling and wouldnt go any faster. i pulled off of the freeway and the car died on me, but i was able to fire it up after letting it sit about 5mins. Then it died again once i got home and it hasnt fired up since. At first i thought it was the fuel pump but that checked out fine and then i checked spark and that was fine, so i towed it to the mechanic and their saying that the motor is bad due to low compression. Im still new to the mechanics and trouble spots of the rotary motor (although this is my second one)im a nissan fan at hard but love the styling of the fc thats why i bought another one. Anyways the car is stock has 155k miles on it, and when i bought it i had it looked at and was told that it runs strong and has good compression. Any advice or suggestions would greatly be appreciated. I really dont have the money for a rebuild right now so if i cant find a fix for less then like 500bucks you will see this car in the FOR SALE threads lol.

do a search on how to do a compression test youself... low compression to a shop that isnt familiar with rotary engines could mean anything.
