1990 GTUs vs 1989 GTUs

Does anyone know what the difference between the rare 1990 GTUs and th 1989 GTUs?
DID anyone see a 1990 before?
This car i am looking at meets all the requirements of being a GTUs (no power windows, no power steering, no rear wiper, no map pockets, aluminum hood, its around 3600 at 80mph, etc) BUT this one has a sunroof!! so i am askin.. who has ever seen a 1990 GTUs before? I mean only 100 of them were produced in the US making it the rarest rx7s to find.. could it be that Mazda made sunroofs for the 1990 models? or an option like AC?

Thanks.

Does anyone want tostart a GTUs owners thread?
state which year you have and mods nd so forth.

Model Year:
Location:

color or pic of your GTUs:

I think it would be interesting to see how many 1989 and 1990 owners are in this forum.
Thanks.

no AC, no sunroof unless someones dumbass put it in aftermarket.
No options, well as far as that stuff goes

Does being a former 1989 GTUs owner count?
Traded it in for my FD back in '98.
Anyway, it was red, totally stock, and bought it right off the showroom floor in '89.

And yes, it was a real GTUs. Didn't want to trade it in, but always wanted an FD. Have a good relationship with this particular dealership (bought 3 RX-7s there), and they put together a very good deal for me.

go_speed_go 05-03-02 07:12 AM

Was it a factory sunroof or an aftermarket model?

I parted out a '90 GTUs (verified the VIN with Mazda NA) that had a really nice ASC glass sunroof on it. I have since seen one other GTUs with the same ASC unit installed.

The GTUs I had also had AC. There's no way in the world you could have sold a car in any southern states without AC.

Mark S 05-03-02 09:18 AM

I have an 89 GTUs, red. She's got 130,000, and was optioned with AC. (Still have the original window sticker)

Mods are:

Custom made full dual exhaust (made by yours truly --with a little help from racing beat ;-)
Jacobs box
HKS Intake
Manual steering rack
Aluminum Flywheel and RB SS clutch
Underdrive pulleys
Eibach and tockico blues
Homemade strut bar
Evans Coolant

The guy I bought the car from said he had the engine balanced and used 3 window bearings on the last rebuild.

I also have a ST sway bar kit for an S-4 I'm trying to make fit and most of the parts to swap to manual seatbelts.

As far as I know, there were no differences between 89 and 90. Though a fctory installed sunroof is a bit odd. I'd check w/ a mazda dealer to verify its authenticity before plunking down any cash

tmak26b 05-03-02 09:22 AM

A/C and sunroof WERE OPTIONS

RarestRX 05-03-02 12:59 PM

Yo,

The A/C was a factory option. The sunroof was a dealer option, probably ASC.

There is no difference between the 1989 to 1990 GTUs, as fas as I know.

vosko 05-03-02 03:10 PM

i like sunroofs therefore i have a TII now ;)

13B2QuIcKNy 05-03-02 03:19 PM

this friend in my neighboorhood has a 1990 black GTUs wit 16 inch tuner rims h and r springs i believe... with a jap spec s5 turbo engine and tranny.... his gears around the shifter all face towards the right... he has a front mount intercooler custom pipes....street port but the questions why did u do that to a gtus and not a gtu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or any other regular coupe.. gtus are meant to leave wit minimal mods or no mods

SoloIIdrift 05-03-02 03:44 PM

I agree, except for the fact I'd like to have a non-sunroof TII almost as much as a nonturbo w/o sunroof.

In Japan the TII's came w/o it, which is how it should be, less weight, stronger chassis :D

RarestRX 05-03-02 03:51 PM

Yo,

And you'll never see us post:

My sunroof leaks.

My sunroof won't open/close.

I can't fit in my RX-7 with a helmet!!

*grin*

No sunroof = Hardcore

That's why the Infini IV/R1/R2's don't have 'em.

vosko 05-03-02 03:58 PM

i've never seen a post about a sunroof leaking. most sunroofs just need a push to get up there. that's ok with me ;) i fit fine in my TII with a helmet when i was road racing and i'm not small or short :) now to find an appropriate engine for my TII :)

RarestRX 05-03-02 04:06 PM

Yo,

Go NA! Ya always see people trying to turbo NA's, be different, make a TII an NA! Oh wait, they did that. I'm driving it. *grin*

Good luck on the engine hunt. Jspec?

Node 05-03-02 04:16 PM

I'm mistaken, they shouldnt had been options! At least the sunroof

vosko 05-03-02 04:23 PM

i found a jspec for a $1k but by the time i get the engine install it, yadda yadda. FD might be all put together ;) i'm gonna see if i can find a rebuilt ported engine. i would MUCH rather do that than worry about if the jspec engine is any good or just a junker like 50% of them are ;)

2FAST7S 05-03-02 07:13 PM

Origianl or not N/As are just way too damn slow!!! My opinion, my GTUs, my cash=what i want to do to it...
In any case, if it hadnt been for Vosko, i would have never thought about checking with mazda.
My car came with no sunroof, had a/c, LSD, 4 piston calipers up front, no power windows and no rear wiper.
Anything else just ask, ill check and post it---FDxc

Hey vosko, i need an engine....should i really look into a cosmo and btw Mr. guru would the stock 3rd gen ecu work with it(think the RE is tt, yes/no)

vosko 05-03-02 07:20 PM

i would get a 13B-RE Cosmo 2 rotor! the only problem is a stock 3rd gen ecu won't work. best bet is bite the bullet and get a haltech E6K from australia where you can get it CHEAP. this solves alot of wiring and sensor issues you would have. you can run the stock twin turbos but you have to convert them to nonsequential. also you will need www.k2rd.com cosmo mounts. i looked into this for my TII. the cosmo engine has the BIGGEST stock ports i've seen them in person at the shop! how much do you want to spend and how fast do you want to go ;) if you want to spend ALOT less get a S5(89-91)TII jspec engine tranny, custom driveshaft,TII ecu, TII engine harness, TII map sensor etc. hmm on second thought maybe you should price it out. after getting all the stock stuff for a TII it might be only slightly more to go with a haltech over a stock ecu. if you gonna go thru all of this might as well go with the cosmo :D

1990 GTUs

Well how late can someone really be... Within a month of turning 18 I had already bought my first car. I got a “1990 Mazda Rx7 Gxl” at least thats what I thought. The car I bought is originally from Washington. The old owner threw on some gross fenders, a TII hood without the scoop and tried to make it a race car. That was as far as they got lol. The car was later sold to another Rx7 enthusiast in reno Nevada. His intentions were to part out the car entirely. Thankfully i took it off his hands for way too cheap for what it was. Slowly i started piecing the car back to it’s original stock look. Months later i found out that it was a gtu, did some digging and researching (god bless this forum) and figured out that it was a 1990 Mazda Rx7 GTUs in (pz) brilliant black. Finding that out, I panicked. What are the chances. GTUs 1/1100 - 1990 1/100 -1/handful black.

This car has its flaws, but I'm going to fix all of that. My goal is to replace or refurbish every last bolt and make it the way it should be. My overall goal when i am done with this car, is to have the exterior as stock and as gorgeous as possible, but inside have a plethora of parts. I want to build it for time attack and mainly downhill touge. Here in reno I live within minutes of lake tahoe. Those are the crazy roads im going to build it to spec to. This car will unrecognizable when done right.

Info: the car came with a sunroof and ac, both I very much enjoy. I know it takes away the integrity of the GTUs title, but damn is it nice. Plasti dipped GTUs/TII Wheels (“racecar”) and a fully rotted out exhaust. Since replaced the original exhaust, with a full racing beat exhaust. To this day i struggle with the plasti dip. But little by little its going away!

Welcome to the forum! You have a rare and desirable car that's for sure! I would suggest creating your own thread in the builds section of the 2nd Generation section. This thread hasn't seen a post since 02 and you'll likely get more responses and people following your thread in the builds section. Again, welcome to the forum!

Mine appears factory with some tasteful upgrades.

Is it a K or L VIN? I'm one of the lucky 100 with a 1990 L VIN :)

AC was a factory option for GTUs, sunroof was not.

I hate to be a downer but your car is not a GTUs, it is a base model S5 "GTU" that someone but S5 Turbo II wheels on.

What size tire does the door jamb sticker have listed?

This is not a GTUs nor are the rare ones black. Considering everyone on the club here will post their red and black gtus and call them rare while no one has the white ones, that is the telling fact that shows the truth.
