1989 GTUs
 

one of the first things I ever fell in love with on this car were the automatic seat belts, but sadly my GTUs doesn't have one. Has anyone ever installed one or have a kit that would be able to be installed on one?

Wow you must be the only one to ever think this way about mouse tracks . ... I'd say you should look at a mazda parts catalog and make sure you collect every single nut and bolt for the swap.

There would be no kit for this because everyone wants to have them removed

The GTUs should have come with the automatic seat belts. All 89 models had them except for the convertible. Odd that yours doesn't. The GTUs was a somewhat rare performance model in 1989 with the best brakes and suspension (I.E. TII) and the lightest weight from deleted items and an aluminum hood.in 1990 only 100 GTUs models were produced.

Along with the mousetrack and motor, you'd also need the A and B pillar trim along with a new center console.

I've swapped two chassis over from mousetrack to manual and it's a surprisingly extensive job...not sure I'd consider doing the reverse.
Not sure the manual cars even have the correct mount points for the mousetrack and that would be a dealbreaker.

The GTUs is my favorite FC.

As stated above, if yours is not modified and does not have auto seat belts it is probably an '88 GTU which was the updated version of the "sport" model.

Just to let you know that the "mouse track seatbelts" had a Mazda recall because they would bind up,stick..and just plain not work.
That is mainly why guys just say screw it and put in the regular seatbelt setup.

Okay that all make sense. I need to find new rear b pillar trim with manual seatbelt hole. If u guys know of any or should I just modify one I already have.

Modify the part you have and take it easy...the "escape slot" for the belt is smaller than you'd think.

I was thinking about drilling a hole in the trim for the bolt that holds the top of the seatbelt. Do you think that would work?

Well yeah, you kinda have to drill a hole in the plastic to access the mount point.
IIRC, you'll also need to make/find a spacer to go between the plastic cover and the body so you don't crush the trim panel as you tighten up the pivot bolt. I think...

A couple of years ago when I was at work and playin around on all data and came across a Mazda recall letter saying this was covered under recall for the life of the vehicle. This was after I purchased my 1989 Gtus. I noticed the binding and was about to take it all apart and mess with it and decided to call my local dealer. They didn't wanna do it but I call MazdaUsa they got em on the line and told em this was right and they replaced it at no cost. Idk i may have ruined it for everyone but may be worth lookin into.
