1989 to 1986 engine swap
I have recently purchased a 1986 and an 89 Rx-7, I got the 89 for 300 dollars from a friend and it has a dieing engine(its at 85000 miles and im told thats about when they die) my 86 has a new engine in it but i would like to put it in the 89 because it has a full options package. will i run into any problems or do you have any tips.

Whoever told you they die at 85,000 is a retard and should be shot on site(or sight, depending how you interpret it). Anyway, you're in for a hell of a lot of swapping to stick the series 4 engine in a series 5. Waukesha, where's that at in relation to green bay? My car's are about 2 hours away from there :-D My suggestion, keep your current s5 engine because they can last a hell of a lot longer than 85k

yeah I agree with Rat, who ever told you 85K was on something.
That motor should last at least twice that with regular maintence. and it is very difficult to back in the 86 motor and have it work in the 89 with doing alot of swaping of parts (like everything but the block) including changing the front covers and OMP. |

just a sidenote but isnt it illegal to drop in an engine from a older model into a more recent model? I think it is ok to drop a newer engine into an older model. Not exactly sure but that is what I believe is true in CA where the emissions nazis live

I don't think that's the case in wisconsin, my truck has a 396 from a '70 chevelle in it, and the truck is a '86 silverado, I've had about 7 different wisconsin cops look under the hood of that thing and know exactly what engine it was without a word.

dont assume the 89 engine is dying because of the mileage...drive it until you feel the engine is toast....
if it aint broke, dont fix it. |

I had to get my turbo 'vert smogged and the guy failed it because no EGR valve (j-spec T2 engine), all because the underhood smog ticker said there was supposed to be one. I went and got a emission underhood sticker from a 89 T2 stuck it over the old 88 N/A sticker and it passed with flying colors. In CA it is illegal to go backwards in engines, you can only go forwards. I am sure it is the same in NY and a couple of the other states that follow CA emissions. |
