1988 vs 1989+ motors for Race car
 
I'm currently running a 1988 rx-7 in SCCA classes ITS and PE. Iam now at the point where I am doing a motor swap. How helpful would a 1989+ be, is it worth the hastle of getting an 89 core to bring back. Do I need anything else new aside from manifolds and ECU? Idont know where all of the changes are except for rotor construction and manifolds, .60 more compression ( I think). With average race mods ,how useful would it really be for me? any input is appreciated and feel free to ask me any questions since I may of left quite a few things out.

I would imagine since you cant really do anything internally to the engine the 89+ engine would be better. Lighter rotors, slightly higher compression, higher redline and more HP potential. It sounds like a good deal to swap. Here on the east coast the fastest 2ndGen RX-7's in ITS are usually running the 89+ engine. Check out www.speedsourceinc.com. They have done well the last few years and have built many cars for their customers.

Everyone in NASA PS-1 that's competitive is running an 89+, but I don't know yet how necessary the extra power is yet.

it's a big pain the in the but to change it. you need 89 engine, harness, ecu, air flow sensor, pressure sensor, and you need to replace the harness under the dash with the 89 one.

your time would be better spent to just use the 89 rotors in the 88, or run an 89 block with all the 88 stuff on it, manifolds, fuel rails, injectors, etc.
