1988 Convertible Speaker Size
Morning!
I have searched, yes, and every stop on the interwebz has a different size listed for my 88 vert. This summer is the summer of restoration and along with a new top, stock stereo and some other things, i'd like to get the speakers all working. headrest speakers are fine, but in the dash and the doors.... what the heck size are they? Anyone with a vert actually install some so I know what size bolts in? |
4 1/4 in the front and 5 1/4 doors. I have an 88 very. I will double check the door ones when I get home. If you still have the stock door speakers keep them. You can cut the speakers out of the mount and use them as a custom bracket. Oh and keep in mind you can't go too deep on the door speakers or they will hit the glass. I did infinity components in the door and they fit like a glove.

sorry they are 4" I used infinity reference 4032cf under the dash and 5030cs components in the door. i plan on mounting the tweeters from the component set on the a-pillers sooner or later. i crammed 2 sets of of 329cf speakers in the headrest. while you are at it you can pull the tire out from behind the seats and mount an amp and an infinity baselink sub :) the depth of the 5030cs speakers was just enough to clear the window as it goes down. i wouldnt go any deeper. hope that helps

Thats fantastic! Infinity is my favorite brand also.
Ill get the same speaker as you have used, ill keep the headrest stock for now (i think). |
yeah it was a pain to shove them in. the whole set up sounds amazing. get them from amazon if you can. they are pretty cheap there. also look at the boom mat speaker baffles for the door. it will keep the elements from reaching the speakers. if you plan on putting in an aftermarket deck i can help you out with that if you get stuck. i was able to get everything working including the speaker controls for the headrest
|
Thanks!
I already added this Infinity speakers to my amazon wish list. I got the full range ones for the doors instead of component, should i get component? As for the rest, my plan is to put a stock radio back in, then get all the speakers working like factory, with aftermarket speakers of course. |
If you are leaving the stock stereo in then you need to have the components for the doors. The doors run off of their own amp and it has a low pass filter so they can only product bass. The full range speakers won't work well for that application. If you do an aftermarket deck then go for it.

the amp behind the driver seat drives the head rest speakers right? |
Yup. The dash speakers are actually full range same as the headrest
|
dont see why you would want to keep the stock radio?
you can slide one part of the stock radio out and slide a modern deck in its place that can play much more media, HD radio, sat radio, MP3 disks, USB, portable hard drives, pandora, etc |
You will get better sound out of a new deck too. I originally left the stock deck on and it didn't cut it.

here is the current setup. still need to make a trim

If you want to keep it all stock looking (you mentioned restoration), you can tie in an aux input to the system and use an MP3 player for music. Don't know exactly how in detail, but throwing the idea out there.
Another option, although not as good sound-wise is one of those cassette to 3.5mm plug connectors to hook an MP3 player up to the stock head unit. |
the modular units in the vert allow you to slide one out, this way it looks stock, will even light up. Get a deck that lights up orange and it looks stock
otherwise I got a 8 track player you can install in there too |
The stock deck is a mess of wires behind it. You are better off taking it all out or nothin'.
|
I have a 90 vert. Anyone confirm headrest speaker size?
|
They are the same size as the ones in an 88. Its nothin' you will find at a regular stereo shop. There is however a a company that sells a direct replacement for them. Or you can cram any 3" ish round speaker with some modification of the foam. Www.3rdstradegy.com
|
Yeah, I figured they were the same SIZE as S5, but WHAT IS THAT SIZE?

Here, I'll give you the same link to the 3rd Millenium web site where all your headrest speaker questions will be answered.

I have an FSM for that, but thanks anyways... However, it doesn't say what size they are. All I want to know is that ****** SIZE! Is that so hard? |
Hey im not entirely sure but i have an 88 vert and went to bestbuy the other day to get some quotes on speakers and the guy looked it up and told me theyre 5" for the door..hope this helps.
|
I can assure you they aren't. Most places don't have correct information about our cars. Best buy told me that if I change my stereo that my headrest speakers wouldn't work. Actually every shop I went to said that. Since there is no proper adapter for our doors I guess you can put what ever you want in it but the speakers I took out of the car were the same size as the speakers I put in.

Just posting this for future reference, I was able to shoe horn a 6.75" Rockford Fosgate in the door with some trimming. Being its a larger speaker lows mids and highs are so nice.

How much of the door did you have to cut away
