So I've been co-oping (interning) at a company since January. I work in a small department with only 4 other people, separate from the rest of the company. Anyway, about a month ago I mentioned that I had an RX7 I am fixing up, and one of the guys I work with told me he bought one back in 1986 new. He has owned it ever since. He put about 8k on it the first year, 6k on it the next, and then after getting keyed, hit in a parking lot by a shopping cart, etc, he decided to keep it for those nice summer days.

Fast forward to today, he finally got a new battery in the thing and brought it to work. He has put about 500 miles on it per year since his initial driving days. The RX7 is a piece of artwork. It is easy to see why people fell in love with these cars, and it was great to see what it was like when everything worked. It was like looking through time to glance the past. The car is 100% original, and not only did I get a ride in it, I also got to drive it. I am only the 2nd person to drive the car since he owned it besides him, so let me tell you, it made my week. I have never driven an RX7 before (I bought mine pre-blown) and I was in heaven. The car was so tight and planted, it was nice to experience how they were stock before suspension components wore out. No creaks, no rattles, and a good solid construction, it is something that many cars today even new ones just don't have. You could tell a lot of work went into the engineering and design. The sound was quite nice even through the stock exhausts. I was really beyond words and quite envious I must admit. It is something that mine will never be, and I feel that it has to be one of the lowest mileage RX7's in existence.

Anyway, I thought you guys would like to see what an RX7 driven for 25,xxx miles looks like.

Here you go, enjoy!

The pictures really don't do this car justice, you have to see it for yourself.

I have to say, I really don't like that interior color on most of these cars, but it REALLY looks nice on this, since it matches the outside of the car. I like the exterior color too, not overly flashy, but unique, especially when compared to modern cars of today.

Simply beautiful.

You sure it's an '87 though? I didn't think power steering was an option in '86.

DeAd-EyE 06-06-07 06:09 PM

the engine bay is all shiney and the DTSS strut covers still work!

ajsuper7 06-06-07 06:12 PM

According to the pamphlets linked on the top of this section you are correct. The 86's did have power steering, but only on the GXL's, which this is not. However, after 06/86 it was standard, so he may have bought it in late '86 and that's why he said it was an '86 model. Good catch, I guess it was likely an early '87.

Jpk3200 06-06-07 06:30 PM

 Now that's a nice ride!

That Rx-7 kid 06-06-07 06:36 PM

wow thats so nice!

Rexpelagi 06-06-07 06:40 PM

He asked if I wanted to buy it, but I don't really have the money. Had I known he had it I would have never began my project, he doesn't really know how much it is worth though, nor do I... It would take the right buyer to pay what the car is probably worth, because there are many people out there who would brush it off as just another slow N/A 7.

mort2002 06-06-07 06:43 PM

that thing is beautiful!

melicha8 06-06-07 07:03 PM

I'd rock that burgundy interior for sure! That thing looks nice!

jonesfromindia 06-06-07 07:45 PM

i remember when i got my first 7. NA, 50,xxx original miles. totally stock. garaged 24/7. blue interior and ext. still smelled new, not really, but it did.

i miss being slow, but looking good. :(

djmtsu 06-06-07 07:56 PM

Damn that FC is nice. I would love to buy it and just drive it until it died but never modify it. Beautiful, especially since its a Northern car. Is that rust-proof in teh engine bay I see? Sweet.

Osirus9 06-06-07 08:25 PM

seriously, wtf are you talking about? DTSS is the rear steering that our cars have under high cornering load, and strut tower covers... are strut tower covers. did you have 2 separate sentences in mind or something?

ohayou88 06-06-07 08:43 PM

wow that car is so clean.. Its just like that FD I saw for sale that had 30k mileage on it.

LiL Red FC3S 06-06-07 08:55 PM

Wow it's nice to see a beautiful looking RX-7. I've only seen one that looks this new and its a 88 vert. besides that I haven't seen any look this good. :)

brandonn 06-06-07 10:24 PM

holy crap thats a nice spoiler. i want one . . . . is there a special name for that one?

Silverfc88 06-06-07 10:32 PM

Whats going on with the paint in the engine bay? Looks like they only painted parts of it or its pealing pretty badly.

That's the duckbill spoiler. I was also told it is functionnal, it reduces the coefficient of drag to .29.

WadeMCarter 06-07-07 12:31 AM

that car is so clean, but if only he chose a better interior to keep perfect.. even brand new, maroon interior is hideous!

Eva001Ikari 06-07-07 03:17 AM

i am so jealous...

There is no pealing paint, I think what you are looking at is a spray on rust proofing type material, but no, the paint is 100% everywhere.

I'm going to ask him how serious he is about selling, this is something I could probably never find again the more I think about it, I wonder if I can make it work... The KBB on the car is 4.3k, I'm thinking it's worth more around 6k? Thoughts?

Shainiac 06-07-07 06:27 AM

Rock the Red 86 Sports! Man I wish mine looked anyting close to what yours looks like. Awesome car.
