13BT Turbo selection discussion

This is still 2nd gen. related ovbiously b/c its on my S4, :p:. I know alot of turbo guys hang out in here and I thought I'd get some quicker discussion. Please, non intelligent related posts are not desirable...

I'm going to be tackling the TII swap into my s4 this summer. Purchasing engine and trans from fc3s, going to be rebuilt, streetported, 80psi OPR, stock 2mm 3 piece seals. I'm looking at turbos, new territory for me when it comes to different turbines, etc, and how the effect turbo performance (ie lag, etc). I was looking at the Garrett T3/60-1. I'm looking for something that will work for street/strip, moderate spool up time, and something that can run moderate boost levels efficiently.

Do you think this will work.......I'm going to be using my never before tuning skills with an E6k most likely. Setup..

13BT rebuilt, ported
stock primaries, 1600cc secondaries
E6K
Greddy FMIC

Basically any help, links reccomendations, to any turbo that would work with me. high 300rwhp to low 400rwhp is my goal. Thanks.

I was told to go with a 1.0 or larger exh..one guy posted that he had the T3 60-1 .82 a/r stage 3 wheel, and he saw 15-17 psi in 1st gear. Input!!!!

Heres My $0.02...

#1, stay away from those damn t3/t4 turbos. I read time and time again from MANY people who have been threw this. Go full T04. Heres the reasoning: Finding a manifold for a t3 that bolts to a TII block is not going to be easy at all. And, t3 housings are a bit small for the rotary, especially ported rotaries. A t3 will be close to a STOCK turbo with a upgraded compressor, might as well just get a hybrid and save money. BUT if you want a full upgrade and are going to be spending the money anyways, GO FULL T04. Get either a 1.00 divided, tang T4 housing or .96 un-divided tang T4 housing. After riding in cars with these set ups its definately the ticket and has been proven time and time again for the receipy for 400 hp and excellent spool comparable to stock turbo with a stock exhaust.

I agree after discussing it and looking aroudn at others peoples setups...I'm looking at these now..

-T4/60-1 w/ .70 turbine
http://store.yahoo.com/cheapturbo/gart0t4w70tu.html

-T4/60-1 w/.84 turbine
http://store.yahoo.com/cheapturbo/gart0t4w84ar.html

-T4/60-1 w/.96 turbine
http://store.yahoo.com/cheapturbo/gatot96ar.html

Input on which will be better for street/strip...the "middle ground" turbo is the T4/60-1 w/ .96 isnt it? How much of a difference in spool up and effience between them. Thanks a ton.

I am looking to upgrade my car over the next year and have similar questions. But no advice sorry. Just thought I would share the confusion.

Have to wait until later on this evening when the big boys get on..

the .70 turbine would be too small in the high end for even stock ports.

I'm looking at something around .90-1.0 divided for my stock S5 block...

My wallet is going to limit the compressor size and trim...

1.15 a/r..its divided though, can I run an undivided manifold? Will it hurt turbo performance?

marcus219 04-18-03 03:43 PM

Divided manifolds are damn spendy..I haven't even seen one for the fc..haven't look to hard though.

No other turbo guru input on a setup...T4 6-01 P-trim w/ .70 compressor and 1.00 exhaust..hows that sound?

Ryde _Or_Die 04-18-03 10:28 PM

Whats the reason not to get a full To4? I say just go with a full T04B. They spool up pretty quickly and are good for 400HP+. Seems just what you want.

marcus219 04-18-03 10:46 PM

What makes a full T04B? I'm still opeing my eyes to different kinds of turbos, etc. Thanks. Quick spool up and 400hp sounds down my alley...

RotaryRevn 04-18-03 11:30 PM

Does a full to4 spool up quicker than a series 4 turbo? I have a stock ser 4 turbo with the twin scroll flapper removed and the manifold ported. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet as my project won't be finished for probably another year.

marcus219 04-18-03 11:36 PM

Spool up quicker..I wouldnt think so since its alot bigger?? I've "heard" that removing the twin scroll increases lag alot...what the hell is that thing exactly anyways?

RotaryRevn 04-18-03 11:44 PM

Twin scroll is a flap that covers one half of the divided exhaust manifold chamber and it is supposed to help the turbo spool up quicker, then it opens and allows air into the other half but it is still a big restriction even when open. I heard it was best to remove it if you were running a wide open exhaust system. I took my chances and removed it. If I am not happy with the turbo, I will just get an aftermarket. This will be my first turbo rotary so I will have to wait and see.
