13b + renesis
 
hey i was thinking for quite a bit so at least shoot me down with dignity....

is there a way to put renesis engine peices into a 13b? i dont mean rotors , i mean like putting the first and third iron on with the middle fc iron to make it work on fc ( obviously )
besides the obviousness of having to make custom I/E, could it be theoritically possible to do this?

I don't think they interchange at all, but even if they did, what would the benefits be, if any?

you have to use the renesis middle iron, it's where the shared exhaust port is.


any other bright ideas you'd like to have shot down?

i was thinking that the exhaust ports were also on the outside irons, was i wrong?

also i was reading that becasue of the side exhaust ports, the renesis has more power which would mean that if i were to merge them, i could run regular housings with the side irons so that i can still run a turbo while getting the benefits of the side irons

if you knew the exhaust port orientation you wouldn't have asked the questions that you did. study harder next time and drink your milk.

"Street Rotary" is an awesome book that has diagrams and explains the difference in Mazda rotaries. Amazon. :)

Mazdatrix has built a hybrid engine with peripheral exhaust ports and side exhaust ports for an Rx-8 race car:

Renesis rotors have been used in older engines but they require significant modification and generally aren't considered worth it for most applications.

You can see that the Renesis has different designs for all the seals on the rotor. It also has an additional seal, called the cut off seal, to reduce exhaust gas from blowing back into the intake ports.

@ arghx, why exactly do the Renesis rotors require modification to be compatible? Is it so a rebuild kit will still work, or are there interference/clearance issues with just straight-dropping-in Renesis rotors with all its seals and such?

Besides having to get the balancing worked out, I think the biggest issue is the shorter apex seal that the Renesis uses. Remember that on the Renesis the apex seal does not pass over the exhaust ports, but the side seal does. Thus Mazda changed the designs to the low profile apex seal and the keystone side seal seen above.

Others have installed Renesis rotors so it's not like it's never been done. Racing Beat has certainly done it, and there are a few people on the forum who have done it as well.

Lol... I haven't. Guess that means I'm not a rotary enthusiast. I should probably sell both my S4s and my garage full of parts and forget everything I know.

Is it just me? But in the pic arghx posted, aren't the exhaust runners going.....the wrong direction?

not if you run the engine upside down, durrr!

it's probably leading to a turbo flange.

and wtf is planted into this rotor anyways? looks like some crap from the lounge photoshopped in..

i would have to agree on the photoshop since it appers to be the bottom part of a valve.

It looks like an intake valve from a reciprocating piston engine.

Renesis motors also have the water jacket grooves on the housings like pre-86 13b's and 12a's.

The answer is yes. But to keep it a 13b, you would have to do it like this:

front iron - renesis
rotor housing - 13b gslse
center iron - renesis ---OR--- 12a/13b gslse center iron
rotor housing - 13b gslse
rear iron - renesis

I know this, because I have done this. There are a lot of other problems that come along with it. It's not just a bolt it up and hope it work's type of build.
