13b 6-port: weber 48 ida or holley kits?
Hello all!
I'm adding a long tube header and pre-silencer for the exhaust. The engine is new. Will I get better starting, low rpm throttle response and general driveability from a weber 48 ida kit or the holley kit? Good cold starting is my primary concern. thanks for the replys! ----bp |
PM Preacher on this subject.
Where in MN are you? |
Good cold starting? How bout EFI? :)

I'm going to school in Mankato but I'm out of Canby area (30ml west of Marshall- near the SoDak border).
I took the car to a shop to get the fuel and ignition to work. the car sat for about 6 years. The guy hacked the sh!t out of it and then quit! I took it to Steinbring in Alexancria and they said it would cost thousands just to straighten it back up. SSOOooooo it's getting electrical distributor/Msd's and some kind of carb kit. If nothing else, I don't have to haul it 100miles to get it fixed. Thanks I'll try pm'ing Preacher. |
Ah, I'm in Mankato (obviously).
Preacher has had good luck with the Weber kit, he seems to know his shit, so ask him :). |
Preacher seems to have turned off his PM/email

I got the car from Rod Olsen; 944 road racer out of Mankato area
|
Is his 944 red?
|
his new car is black with a puzzle scheme all over it (sponsors can buy a piece). He may have had a red one. As far as i know, he doesn't drive one on the street.

Um.. if you want to get it back up to speed reasonably quickly (read: not spending a lot of time and money fabbing stuff up to fit), then I'd look into getting a stock wiring harness from someone, and dropping that in. or, if it's REALLY screwed up, and you want to get the ability to control unlimited power while keeping it streetable, a standalone with EFI is the way to go. A megasquirt and some wiring will set you back less than $400, and you'll be able to use all of your exisiting hardware, plus the ability to tune anything you want to throw at it.
I was talking to a customer of ours, Tom Hemphill, he builds drag racing engines (not rotary). I was having a discussion about the potentials of EFI in drag racing (it's currently all carbed at the 6 seconds levels that he runs at). "it's not about max power that's availble from either setup. We've run both back to back, and give or take 4 horse power, it's no different at WOT. For keeping people honest, carbed is a lot easier to check on the sidelines than EFI, for starting the car when it's cold out, I'll take EFI any day.". |
captainpegs and Jager, please take private discussions to PMs. Thanks.

Maxdatrix is telling me the holley setup

Tell us what's wrong with it and I'm sure you'll get the help and info you need to get it working. |
I suspect the "thousands" involved buying a new wiring harness from Mazda for way to much money, then lots of hours of labor to install it. As stated, this can be done yourself by getting a new harness and maybe some help from the forum. Plus youll know your car better than lots of people on here.

I REALLY appreciate all the input but, being a grad student with little time and with enough stress as it is, I'm going to carb it. It will undoubtedly run rougher off idle and be harder starting but I have experience with tunnel ram v-8's and expect this would run similarly. The exisitng system is over 20 years old and tech's who can work on it around here are few and far between.
To me, simplicity is worth its weight in gold, i.e., carb and elec. distrib. I'm very thankful for the help and advice though! Very supportive group in here! *costs will be reduced somewhat by selling off the old system. |
