10th Anniversary RX-7
 

I have come accross what i think is a 10th anniversay rx-7 and i have been thinking about purchasing it. The problem being other then rx-7's having a rotary engine and the fact that there were only 1500 10th anniversary cars made other then that I don't know anyhting about them. I reconized the 10th anniversary symbol on the car but how hard would it be to get a fake one and put it on the car. So to be sure it is a 10th anv version it would be really cool if someone could give me some things to look for on the car other then the things that say 10th anniversary to make sure it is the real thing. I'm seriously interested in the car because i know who owns it, but she knows less about the car then I do. The car could use a coat of paint because of what look like a few rock chips on the hood. It also need a new steering box to pass inspection. Other then that it is in great condition and thats why i'm interested in it, and that it might be an authentic 10th anniversary model.

Any info on how to tell if it is authentic or a ball park of how much it wold be worth would be really appreciated either with this post or e-mailing it to me at fearless66@hotmail.com.

10th AE's are the only S4's to have black leather interior. That one would be a dead giveaway. Had bronze glass. Headlight washers, all white exterior (even moldings and wheels), and a bunch of other minor stuff.

Many things can be changed, but the bronze window tint would probably be a little more difficult to fake than other items. The ricers commonly dye their interiors, so I wouldn't go by the black interior.

I think it's best to go by the paint code "UC". The VIN can also help at least determine if it is an 88 turbocharged model with the first sequence alphanumerics of JM1FC332xJ. (The x is a number that varies).

The bottom line is that a 10AE is only worth about 10% more than a regular 88 TII, so just make sure the car is in good working order and have fun with it. It sounds like you don't know much about these cars, so be sure to get it checked out by a good mechanic who knows 2Gen RX-7's. Pricing should be somewhere between $1500 and $3500, depending on the condition. See the FAQ "sticky" in this 2Gen forum for more 10AE information and car buying tips.

it should have every option available basically speaking. (minus special order items)

leather, powersteering, power windows, power locks, sunroof, security system, rear wiper, spoiler, 6.5"? rear speakers (not 4" anyway), factory air conditioning

The rotory engine is not a problem it's the best thing !

LOL, that's what a lot of people on Ebay want you to think when they try to hock their 88 TII. They also want you to think that the 10AE is worth a zillion dollars, which I find amusing.

Please take my word for it when I say that the 10AE looked absolutely stunning when it hit the showroom floors. They still look pretty good if the original paint is intact. While the 10AE trim is mostly cosmetic in nature, I think it is well worth the extra $300 or so dollars if the car is in pretty good shape.

Paint in tact? Something else I thought is that, by now, they were all bald.

That's another funny thing about people selling them mint. If they are mint they tend to ask 6000+. But that means they have the original paint that is just waiting to start falling off any day.

Thank you for your responces when i get to go look at the car again i know what to look for to see if it is a legit 10th ae or not. By the way is a mazda dealership the best place to take the car for have it look over ?

"Mint" is actually another term for "uncirculated" or "showroom" condition. Therefore, any real mint car would have 0 miles on it (or close to it), and would be in exactly the same condition as it left the factory or arrived at the dealership. I have seen a real mint 10AE before, and it's not like anything I have seen on Ebay. ;)

Just for giggles, had a Mazda dealership put one of their 10AE models in a vacuum storage chamber, and sold it today as a true mint 10AE, it would sell for over $38,000 based on the CPI inflation rate of its original sticker price of about $24,000.

Not usually, I'm sad to say. However, it beats the heck out of taking it to a Chevy dealer, lol. It's probably best to see if you can find a local RX-7 performance shop that knows the 2Gen RX-7. Some RX-7 shops specialize in 1Gen or 3Gen RX-7's, so be sure to ask.

lol i just looked up the cloesest rx-7 specialty shop in the yellow pages i could only find 1 in the same province as me and it is calgary about 4-5 hours from where the car is being stored

is there a place in Edmonton Alberta that anyone knows of?

Damn, I just crunched some numbers... my $13k MSRP '86 Sport would run around $21,800 now... and that was a special introductory price for the first, lowest model 5-lug FC's.

$38k was a pretty big price to pay, granted market equivalency. Now I can see why TII's didn't sell so well.

Yeah, I could barely afford my new 88 SE at $17K. Also, interest rates were 8-10%, which is unfathomable to some of the younger people on this forum. However, the sticker price was a great deal for the quality of the car at that time. A loaded TII or a 10AE model was really only affordable to those who were upper middle class and above. Even the base models were beginning to depart from the original RX-7 (1Gen) concept of a sportscar for the masses. I wish Mazda would go back to that idea.
