10th Ann. TII trouble.

Hey, i have an '88 TII tenth anniversary. It's not been modified at all, unless you count the missing cat as a modification. It's not been rebuilt, either. It's got 140k miles on it, but it's in near perfect condition, with the exception of this one thing. It's very choosy of when it wants to be fast. Upon a cold start, it is *EXTREMELY* slow. I'm talking 17-18 second 1/4s. It doesn't even get that much faster when it's been on for 30 minutes. In order for it to be fast, and when i say fast, i mean low 14 second 1/4s, this is the process i have to take.
Start up the car, drive it for 30-45 minutes. Shut it off for 45-75 minutes. Turn it on, drive it for 5 minutes. Until i do this, it's slow as all hell. Any ideas? I've noticed that the boost seems to get up a little higher after the procedure. Any help would be appreciated. It's not a huge deal, but it's annoying.

hmm, possibly a water thermosensor problem?

cls6888 06-07-06 07:51 PM

same exact thing is happening right now with me and my 87 turboII , and it is a big deal lol I run at the track and this makes it almost impossible.

SimplyComplex 06-07-06 07:55 PM

I run at the track, too. I actually do drift demo's for nopi in this car. heh. I just time my driving and start times accordingly. I don't think it's a water thermo problem.. looking for something maybe turbo related, seeing as how there's a higher boost level after going through the motions.

cls6888 06-07-06 08:04 PM

yaa defiantly sucks im using stock boost guage so its hard for me to tell if the boost goes up higher when it runs fast. But it defiantly just periodicly will runn quick and the other times its dog slow. At the track my 1st run i ran a 16.4 after about a 30 minute break my scond run i ran a 14.5 then after about 30 more minutes i ran a 3rd time and ran a 15.8... theres definatly a major diffrence from when its running quick and when it doesnt...Is this a common problem?? i wish someone on these forums has had this problem and can let us kno what they did to fix it.

sounds like an oil type problem? something about the flow to the turbo or the weight of the oil? Goes away when oil heats up and thins out to flow better, past the blockage in the line? Just throwing it out there.

cls6888 06-07-06 11:17 PM

no , because even when heated up it still doesnt drive at its "fast" potential its once u shut it down and let it sit for sum time then start it up again.

Removing the emissions would be a great starting point...

cls6888 06-08-06 12:17 AM

hmm.. i dont see y i should have to remove emissions to solve this problem.

It would give you the ability to eliminate any potential problems related to that specific equipment. Not too mention make your engine bay prettier.

cls6888 06-08-06 10:21 AM

screw it im driving down to rx7store monday so hopefully they can fix it.

Removing the emissions eliminates a ton of possibilities, and makes it alot easier to diagnose problems...

SimplyComplex 06-08-06 10:50 AM

Okay, but in my case, we're talking about a tenth ann. I'm not doing a goddamn thing to that car. Except leave it pretty much straight piped, seeing as how it has a 2 foot gap in the exhaust.

13b4me 06-08-06 10:55 AM

With the cat removed, you may as well remove all the emissions anyways... It's not gonna bring the value down any, being it's more reliable... Besides, you're in FL where emissions doesn't exist! Let your car breathe!

SimplyComplex 06-08-06 12:23 PM

are you talking about removing the airbox, and all the other engine shit as well? because that's what i don't want to remove. I can replace the cat in 20 seconds. if i buy aftermarket shit for the car, it won't be a bone stock Tenth ann... and i can't have that.

SimplyComplex 06-09-06 12:15 PM

Meh, regardless, does anyone else have this problem/know what is is, definately? Any help'd be much appreciated.

J-Rat 06-09-06 12:53 PM

Well, lets break this down simple like...

1. Have you performed a tune up?
2. Checked timing?
3. Pulled codes?

SimplyComplex 06-09-06 05:02 PM

I've tuned it up, but haven't checked timing/pulled codes. But i don't see how those would effect the seemingly higher boost levels.

you would be surprised..
