$5.00 2-Groove Alternator Pulley (Alternator Dual Belt Pulley)
Yes, just 5 bucks. I have been doing some research. Paying 50-60 bucks is too much for a pulley. Here are the specs on the 2nd gen. RX-7 (Mitsubishi) 86-88 alternator (shaft 15mm, center of pulley 9mm). So I did some research and found this one. I have ordered it, but have not received it yet. It should fit perfectly, and the good news, five bucks! If it works I will let everyone know where I got it. The company that made it does not make it anymore (discontinued). However there is a large stock at a distributer that I hooked up with.

I'll absolutely let you know. I looked at a differnet pulley manufactured by the same company, and it felt solid yet not too heavy. This one seems to be a good find for the $.

1. Pick jaw up of floor after seeing the savings
2. Add thread to favorites. Let us know if it works. I could definitely use a new pulley. |
When I my t2 months ago I kept throwing belts and chewing up the front seal. I took it to an alternator shop and they gave me a double pulley off of an 86 or so 6cyl chrysler with mitsubishy alternator. It works perfect. And they gave me the pulley for free out of the scrap alt bin. He said he remembers these cars from way back... cool eh.

I got mine from a local shop. Mine is a standard 1/2'' shank dual groove pulley.
|
Lots of late 80's Subarus had Hitachi alternators that fit our cars with no problem (need to use Subaru lower bolt). Some of them had dual-groove pulleys stock. I don't know if the pulleys will fit a Mitsu alternator but I do know that the whole unit will fit!
|
Felix and others,
The 1/2" shank is too small for the stock 15mm shaft. If I did my math right 1/2" is about 3mm to narrow and will not fit properly. Not saying that yours does not work, but you do not have a Stock Mitsubishi 86-88 alt OR you do not have a 1/2" bore pulley. For other fellow RX-7 heads, you might want to test an American standard 1/2" bore on the metric shaft before you purchase. The fit and center alignment is very precise. If the center is not perfect the belt will not spin straight and smooth. Kinda like a lowered car in need of a camber adjustment :-) my .02 -DL |
15mm is equivalent to 19/32s IIRC. I used to have a 19/32s wrench when I was a little kid and I always wondered why they made it, then I found out it fit perfect on the nuts that held the wheels on my bikes, then years later i discover those are actually 15mm nuts. :)
1/2 inch is about 12.5mm, lots smaller than 15mm, if you have a mill you can just open them suckers up a little! |
So are you guys telling me that the 86 chrys pulley won't work. If you are , my car shows different.
Jim 87t2 |
You are exactly right. The 86 chrystler had a 15mm bore alternator. And Dodge, and plymouth. Take your pick!
All had: Mitsubishi IR/EF Alternators Used On: (1987-81) Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth Unit Nos: Mitsubishi A4T25191, A4T25199, A4T30399 Dimensions: 10mm Belts x 67mm OD x 15mm Bore |
Oh ick, I bet those are the alternators used on those awful 2.6l engines they put in K-cars and minivans... :bash:
|
keep me posted
|
Hey Peejay, You don't have to worry it's not the pulley making those chryslers knock......hehe
|
Does that pulley underdrive the alternator at all?
Can you find cooresponding e-shaft and water pump pulleys? It would be freaking awesome if we could get a whole underdrive set for like 15$!! -Tesla |
funny you should mention it. I am working on finding the correct size for UD and offset. The alt pulley should UD as it is 67mm and the stock is ~62mm. We could really have a perfect set at a low $. Guess I am cheap. I will update the minute I get the alt pulley (should be Thurs. or Fri as I went cheap on shipping too ;-)

DAMN!!! $5?!?!?!?! I paid $75 for the dual pulley and two belts when I got my FC and you're telling me I could have saved $70?!?!?!?!?!
Damn it! |
Hey rxhevin
Alot of the first gen guys (me included) used these a year or so ago on our FB's. Mine worked out very well with the exception that the material these are made from are a non-coated porus cast material. If you were to use one, they should be Jet-hot coated or powder coated. I really need another one of these, hook me up with your connection and I'll have mine coated one way or another... Or arrange it yourself so we can have a group buy.... Send off like 10 to jet-hot, have them coated, and ten shipped back to you.... then you sell them cheaply, but for enough you can profit a little from them, (maybe $1 each) Please let me know! I want to remove my air pump tomorrow, and do not trust the single pulley... |
Thanks for the advice, GT. I have not installed the pulley yet. I have had a super busy weekend. I should be able to this week. So I can't comment on the fit or anything. I do not want to be a "middle man" (don't have time). If you want to wait until I put it on, I will post a full report with pictures and details. Otherwise here is the info to order. If you are not a shop, tell them that you are a shop and that you need to set up an account. (these places are wholesale, hence $5.00). If you have any trouble I will order it for you as I have an account and you just pay the cost+shipping. Call around because other shops may have it too. So here is the information:

I tried the one in orlando fl and they don't have it anymore. They said that you will have a hard time finding one. I tried an alternator shop and they have one for $10. Just find one that is helpful and it should be cheap.
|
So, is this an underdrive pully?
If so, are there any downsides to using one?
|
metric verses american
To find the decimal for metric and american you:
If you know american number: 1/2 inch is .500 so .500 X 25.4 = 12.7MM if you know metric: 12.7mm x .03937 = .49999 inch 15 mm x .03937 = .59055 inch You will not fit a .500 bored pulley on a 15mm shaft (.590) -billy |
Asherwood, underdrive pulleys save you horsepower at high rpm, but not much. IMHO they're a waste of time on a street car because you spend so little time at constant high rpm. They make practically no difference to power at lower rpm, but you're alternator is charging less. They're good on race cars looking for every last hp and don't need the alternator running flat out. The same theory holds for underdriven water pumps.
|
NZConvertible and others, That is true, however the main reason that FC owners use the 2 groove pulley is because you need it if you remove the air-pump. The water-pump needs a second belt. So if you remove your emissions system, get the 2 groove pulley (street or track).
-DL |
You're right, that's why I got mine. Damn squealing belts drove me nuts! But what he asked was what are the downsides to using an underdrive pulley.:)
