$3500 To Spend On What?

hey guys i have just a little over $4200 to spend but im in canada so thats somewhere around the $3500 mark, i have a 89 GX without s5 tails, so what do you think i should spend the money on? t2 hood? s5 tails? lsd ? tII swap? exterior? interior? im kinda stumped... let me know what you guys would do...

SpeedyRotary 01-08-05 02:49 PM

t2 swap.

91mazdarx7 01-08-05 03:02 PM

yup id get a t2 swap best thing to spend the money on

RidicilousRx7 01-08-05 03:02 PM

ya i was thinkin TII Swap 80%...

RotaryWeaponSE7EN 01-08-05 03:03 PM

Swap it.

ajsuper7 01-08-05 03:08 PM

yeah, get a swap b/c a stock s5 tII is still faster than a fairly modded n/a and has potential to be turbo monster.

ddub 01-08-05 03:11 PM

Sell the car and buy a TII, you'll spend less money overall than doing the swap, most likely.

This is IF the TII engine and drivetrain is the route you want to go rather than building up an N/A, of course.

... unless you want to buy my long block 88 TII motor... Got one sitting here and I want it ouf my garage.. It has everything minus the TMIC.... can't find it :)

raising arizona 01-08-05 03:21 PM

Shoot! I didn't mean to quote ya. But I do have a nice good compression motor w/ 63k on it...

RotaryWeaponSE7EN 01-08-05 03:39 PM

Buy a wrecked or blow TII. Then Swap or rebuild. Its really fun and u learn alot about the car.

PureSephiroth 01-08-05 04:17 PM

this depends on what you want out of the car.

more straight line acceleration? TII
better handling? Tires, springs, sway bars, shocks
anything broken? fix that first
better feel when driving? new bushings, short shifter, bucket seats

saying you have $3,500 and asking what you should do with it is way to general a question for anybody to give a realistic answer to. Yes, a lot of these guys would do a TII swap if THEY had the money, but what do YOU want?

Tell us where you want to go, and we can tell you how to get there.

Agreed. It all depends on your intentions and goals for the car.

I have an N/A and recently had a nice little chunk of change to play with and currently I'm doing ground control coilovers with tokico illumina 5-way adjustables, full polyurethane bushings, toe eliminator bushins, front/rear/lower bars, etc.

Suspension upgrades go a long way.

very well said... well i bought the car december 18th of 2004 , i plan on keepin it for a couple of years and want to make it an all around amazin FC, widebody , deep dish rims, 400hp, the whole nine yards, so i guess my real question is where would be the best way to start... i obviously care about the speed but i rly like to uphold the look of the rx7... so thats why im a little stumped...

PureSephiroth 01-08-05 06:28 PM

if you want to do a widebody 400HP poject I'd probably start with the TII swap also. My guess is this will a good testing water for you. Lot's of people want to make 400HP widebody FC's but few do. So start with the engine swap and see how dedicated you are to the project before you spend money on something like a widebody that you'll have no use for.

If i were you and I had that ammount of money. i would turbo my n/a, that way you dont waste your good motor and still make good or better power than a tII depending on the turbo. WIth that money you can get a nice one. Upgrade my exaust and have a sweet ride. Might even be able to afford the body crap you wanted after that as well.

cmjaure 01-08-05 06:34 PM

I would get the n/a ported and built good you can have a lot of fun with a ported n/a and if its built right it will last

RotaryWeaponSE7EN 01-08-05 07:16 PM

Wow for a second there this thread was going down hill. Only problem with ported n/a is they tend to eat fuel at a fast pace and they dont really always like to idle.

PureSephiroth 01-08-05 11:14 PM

the 4 port will be better for the 400hp goal because of the lower compression rotors. You can run higher boost on lower octane. my suggestion would still be either buy a TII and sell the NA, or do the engine, trans, and rear end swap.

therotaryrocket 01-09-05 12:45 AM

whats the disadvantage of turboing the n/a 6 port? do the 6 ports not flow correctly? seems like it would be more power being higher compression. stop talking crap and smack.

PureSephiroth 01-09-05 12:57 AM

what did I say?

it's not the 6 port, it's the higher compression rotors. The lower compression rotors are actually better for big horsepower goals because you can run higher boost without knocking. The S4 engine is said to be a better platform for big numbers than the S5 for this same reason.

gonzz 01-09-05 01:30 AM

T2 swap..

rs_1101 01-09-05 01:56 AM

t2 swap.. cheaper insurance on an NA

Aaron Cake 01-09-05 10:15 AM

First things first, I cleaned up the thread. Warnings have been sent as required. Please keep this thread clean. Any more crap an infighting and I'll simply delete the entire thread.

Secondly:

That's totally untrue. The S5 and newer blocks are best for big power due to the lower dowel area in the S4 being weak and prone to cracking around the 400HP mark.

Play nice, children.

As an addendum to Aarons post,

in all honesty, that is totally inconsequential on a street car. I've run as high as 18 psi on the street on my higher comp S5 engine. When Steve Kan tuned our TII's this summer he was tuning for the same boost level on both S4 and S5 engined cars (17 psi).

On pump gas you will exceed the limits of the fuel way before you exceed the limits of the S5 engine in terms of boost.

Maybe when building an engine for high boost drag applications (20psi+) would it start to matter. As it stands, my higher compression engine is better for street driving because I have some extra NA pickup (which helps overcome my big laggy turbo :)).
