So, my s4 got impounded last night. What to do with my life now?
 

So, last night I pulled out and I passed a cop who didn't have line of sight of where I pulled out at. He did a U-turn in the middle of the road after I drove by and I knew he'd be coming for me. I'm like, "oh shit, someone called me in for sliding my car out of my parking spot." I whip into taco bell and shut the car off, right when I go to get out he runs through a busy 4-way stop and at a angle, not even staying in the road pulls into tbell AND THEN he turns his lights on when he gets behind me. He walks up to my window and he goes, "Buddy you should get those brakes fixed, I saw you go through that stop sign back there and just slow down." Shew, he didn't know about me sliding it around. Figure I can get out of a rolling stop easy. NO. He then starts telling me he couldn't see my brake lights and that my exhaust (stock exhaust) was too loud, something about improper equipment as well. I told him that my brake lights did work but the previous owner had blacked them out with that see-through spray paint, but he had cut around just to make extra sure that ALOT of light shows through. The cop said I was disrespecting him. Then I asked him where he was whenever he saw me pull out. He told me he had clear line of sight, didn't tell me where he actually was and insured me that he knows that rules a lot better than me. He had already told me he was impounding my car whenever I told him my brake lights did work.
So I continued to be an asshole to him because there was shit else he could do to me.
He took my baby away.

Please paragraph your next posts. So you can get your car back right? I mean I dont understand how they impound your car for brake lights, exhaust. I was under the assumption that you would recieve a ticket to have such items fixed within a cetain time.

You should know smoked, or 'blacked out' brake lights are illegal. In most states, you are not allowed the right to modify your tail lights in any way that inhibit light transmission to anything lower than stock, output wise. And before you start explaining to us all how you cannot afford new tail lights, let me just inform you that it is basically common knowledge that autozone and other parts stores carry very cheap paint thinner, stripped, acetone, etc, etc... that would make short work of that spray-on tint.

As for 'sliding around' in a parking lot... How about we take the illegal out of it? Have you ever thought of simply finding who the business owner is and simply asking if you can play around at night after everyone is gone? It's just a big empty parking lot...what's the worst you can do?

Yeah, sorry. Without having a car to take my anger out in, I was rage posting.
I bought the car like that and I was only driving it to work and back.
I had to go out to town and find out if this guy still wanted to trade me because my seven is starting to overheat again. (already have one blown up rx7)
I didn't get a ticket for sliding my car around. I figured that is what it was though.
The cop didn't mention anything about it; probably because he was a mile and a half away when I pulled out.
I did get my car out of the impound today and it should all get thrown away whenever I can explain everything to the county attorney.
It just pisses me off that I can sit and watch people run stop lights, fix their hair and drive, text and drive, but somehow most of them still have their license.
Which is my next point, the cop threatened to have them junk my piece of shit.
I just hope he liked his time on the force.

Cop was just doing his job, he probably saw someone that looked immature, then when that person kept trying to correct him, got aggressive.

I've had my share of vehicle mod tickets. Sometimes they do profile the car even if you drive perfect.

This incident left me clueless.
I'll be the first to admit I do stupid stuff.
I don't do it recklessly, mostly just in empty parking lots.
I've never been caught doing any of it.
I think blacked out lights look gay too, but I've had to spend all my time trying to make my car safely drivable.
I didn't try to correct him until he got in my face and started getting "He-Man."
I have respect for cops, but whenever they are just in it so they feel important.
I lose all of it.
I help pay his salary so he can patrol the streets for crime, not so he can waste three hours impounding a car because of a rolling stop he didn't see. :)

funny how you say you do "stupid stuff but never get caught." You will learn that karma has a way of creeping up on you and eventually you do get caught.

Just be a good driver and slow down; dont drive recklessly. Cops are not the enemy. Having the power in your Rx-7 is.

I'm not hating on cops.
Just the cops that think that them wearing a uniform makes them more important than me.

typical alot of cops down here are like that late at night. i guess its because they get bored and look for any reason to pull someone over but i've learned if you keep your cool and are nice typically the officer will just let you go with a verbal warning. there are those few dick cops though that think they are big and bad and start off being a jerk from the start, its those cops that give all the other cops a bad name.

I live in a pretty small Southern Indiana city and I can tell you that it might not just be karma like the one person posted. Word has probably spread through the police station that people have seen you doing stupid stuff in your RX. So you get pulled over for something stupid and he throws the book at you for past offenses you didn't get caught for.

Point being, you put a target on your forehead whether you get caught at that time or not.

That and hiding from the cops tends to piss them off. I got popped doing just over 60 in a 45 soon as I passed the car I get in the right lane and pull over. I had the top down and as the cop is walking up to the car he says "Well, I can't very well ticket you if you pull over that fast" The officer was cool as hell, thanks me for pulling over so fast that he almost passed me by while looking for me. He gives me a warning and another warning for expired driver's license and sends me on my way.

In general i like cops, iv got a few cops in my family. But there are a few asshats in a uniform that do ruin the hard work and training and risks that they go through. A bad day for a cop could mean a bad day for everyone else around him, and that is UNPROFESSIONAL! but it happens, and they inappropriately stick their pride on their badge and call it the law.

OP in your case, I could see a cop pulling you over, sizing you up, and then poking at you to see your reaction or responses. Which is part of the training to any military or law enforcement. Talking back to a cop or trying to explain your shit when he didn't ask for an explanation is usually grounds for a fight, and can easily be labeled disrespect.

I think your car being impounded is a little overboard in my opinion based on your story, but i wasn't there to see the event unfold.

OP i'm finding it hard to side with you, and if i was your friend IRL i would point and laugh at your misfortunes. But i'm just happy that you got your car back, and i hope you get everything else dropped.

Just remember when being pulled over, the best thing you can say is "NO". After that it's all "Yes sir. OK sir. No sir." Just feed their ego because they are usually in it for the power trip. Sometimes you just have to suck the proverbial cock for a few minutes. It could mean the difference between a simple ticket, or an impounded car ;)

+1 there are times for ass-kissing and paying respects to people whether you actually think they deserve it or not. LOL on deeper inspection that's kind of the basis for all corporate/work interactions.

I respect cops that actually talk to you. Whenever he got out and started yelling i lost all respect because I know he has a big ego and is trying to feel better about his shit life. When I want to feel better I just knock back some beers; not take it out on others.

You had an illegal modification to your brake lights and then you argued with a cop, whether you meant to or not. Granted it was pretty harsh but it doesn't surprise me that this happened.

Sounds like you could have handled that a bit better being formal, polite, agreeing with the problems and not arguing. I've had friend last week week who ran two stop lights all the meanwhile driving 80mph in a 30 with a license plate that expired 2 months ago and registered to a different owner who tried to hide just like you, but got chased down and found-- not even a slap on wrist (obviously very lucky).

That's not to say what happened wouldn't have happened necessarily, but you definitely would have a better chance of it not happened if you promised to get everything fixed alongside what I said above. I'm not fond of the police either, and I've run into a lot that try to exercise their power, but they are doing their job. You're lucky he didn't charge you with reckless driving too.

man I had a friend who was driving a G35 sedan from a party, and he was definitely over the legal limit. Cop pulled him over, he took a field sobriety test, and somehow managed to convince the cop to let him go with his passenger driving home. The passenger was drunker than he was.

To the OP, As you said you've been stupid driving in the past and it sounds like it caught up to you. I wasn't there to see your incident, but from hearing you talk about it sounds like you gave attitude back and he had authority to make your day as bad as he wanted to.

I should have worded my post in chronological order because I think that it has been misunderstood. He told me he was impounding it before I
"disrespected" him. After he said he called the tow service there wasn't anything else he could do so then I started being a smart-ass/dick/w/e.
By stupid things I mean I drive on back roads to quick and drift in empty gravel parking lots in the middle of nowhere. There are never people around to observe any of these things. I don't think it was a "catching-up"
A lot of the people I know in the area have had similar problems with this officer.
Whenever I rode back out with a friend the first thing they asked me was if the cops name was -blank- and that's who it was.
Other than not driving my vehicle last night, nothing could have prevented it.
