Should i ditch the a/c

So the thing is my a/c sorta works. I gotta remove the dash and re seal all the ducting and give whatever the box with the drain in it is a good clean out because it clogs up and the water drains under my carpet, no matter how much i try to vac it out or how much compressed air i blow up there.

I tried fixing this a while ago and my dash is in pretty good nick but the plastic is too brittle, i tried popping out the idiot panel as per the manual and both tabs that hold it in broke off.

What I'm thinking of is ditching it completely, running a new IC pipe setup that will run it where the compressor was, the car should run cooler without the condensor in front of the radiator. And it will just clean alot of shit up in the engine bay. (I'm planning on doing a major freshen up of the engine bay over the xmas holidays tidying up all the wiring etc)

However not that I plan on selling this car, having working a/c is a good selling point, and it would be nice if i managed to get the dash out without breaking and make it work properly. How many of you have gotten the dash out with no issues?

i can get the dash out quickly without breaking anything but i've also done it about 10 times. also, i removed AC on both my cars. it takes up too much room and is an eyesore.

solareon 10-10-09 10:58 AM

dash comes out easily without having any possibility of breaking the ac stuff

Take out the AC. I noticed much cooler running temps with mine gone.

ditch it. like dude above said...it frees up quite a bit of room :)

Dont have to take the dash out to get to the a/c just take the glove box out

puhpaper 10-10-09 01:56 PM

Do you like being hot?

KhanArtisT 10-10-09 03:09 PM

depends on what the car is used for. If you have another car as a daily then take it out. Any modified FC is not worth daily driving and is a complete nightmare to commute with. If you must use it for commuting then keep the A/C and retrofit it with R134.

and remove your power steering to be like every other non-comfortable FC here lol =)

if you ditch it, relocated your power steering to the bottom

tevan 10-11-09 04:41 PM

If you get hot just roll down the window. That's my a/c lol

dkwasherexd 10-12-09 01:39 AM

i always wanted a/c.. .. I wish my car would have it. If I were you id fix it..

clokker 10-12-09 07:03 AM

You don't need to remove the dash to get rid of the AC condenser (or whatever that thing under there is called), just pull the glove box and it's right there.
Oh wait, is this car RHD?

dkwasherexd 10-12-09 01:43 PM

keep the a/c !

It's a tough call, if I had good working A/C and didn't need to use the space it takes up, I'd probably keep it. But if your car is modded and put under more stress I'd take it all out so you don't have a huge condenser blocking the radiator. It probably doesn't make a big difference in reality, but it does alot for peace of mind. But for a stock or stock-ish car, A/C is really nice to have (I wish mine worked ).

Terrapin_turtle 10-12-09 07:31 PM

If it gets hot very many days a year where you live keep it.

gxlbiscuit 10-12-09 07:53 PM

keep whats the real point of removing it.. if you cant replace the weight with hp then lose it your race car doesnt need it. if its street driven keep it. to me there is something pimp about being fast and reasonably comfortable.

KhanArtisT 10-12-09 08:29 PM

Yeah but an FC with coilovers, solid mounts, free flowing exhaust, aggressive clutch, performance tires, manual steering and racing seats is anything but comfortable. Hey but it has A/C! The car is generally a PITA to drive everyday, not worth keeping the A/C unless you plan to only do mild mods or go baller on all the parts and keep it nice.

quick question can i swap my S4 N/A a/c to work on my s4 TII? Thnx in advance

Gregory Casimir 10-15-09 10:39 AM

it really depends on were you live and if you gonna daily drive it and some track use but like it s been said before, keep it cause its really uncomfortable driving in a car without it. i know i'm fixing mine.
