Seats!!!

Lets see your seats!

My TII currently has some atrocious "racing" seats... I don't know what to buy and need some inspiration.

I am interested in this thread since my stock 87 FC seats are not the most comfortable. w.sen, how did you mount those seats, did you use the stock rx7 tracks and bolt them to the vw seats? I have a really nice pair of CRX stock seats that I am going to try to put in my rx7, if the base height isn't too high

Steve

ya stock tracks just drilled holes to mount the seats. the passenger seats isnt completely straight cuz of the way the track is mounted to the body of the car.... i think arron cake even said it on his web site too.

CRX seats are some of the nicest OEM seats ever.
I put a set in my 240Z and absolutely loved them...when that car sold and I got the RX I located another set, after trying three Mazda seats.
The stock Mazda seats are all just subtly off, nothing seems to fit exactly as it should.

Mounting the CRX seats in a second gen is tough for a couple of reasons.
Starting on the (much simpler) driver's side, the main problem is the non-flat seat base of the CRX part.
The Mazda seat tracks have a solid crossover piece to release/lock the tracks (looks like coathanger wire) and it won't clear the reverse hump of the Honda seat. The lever part of the track release will also foul the seat base.

I finally just made simple brackets to attach the seat to the stock mounting points but in doing so, lost any adjustment.

The passenger seat mount in the second gen is a nightmare no matter what you're trying to bolt in. Unlike the driver's side, it's totally asymmetrical.

I finally gave up and put in a set of Corbeaus...not nearly as comfy but much easier to properly install.
It's really too bad, the CRX seats were not only great for long haul comfort but the black/dark grey w/ red pinstripe upholstery was a great match for my interior.
I miss 'em.

^ it sounds like I have the same color crx seats. That sucks they are going to be hard to use but thanks for the heads up.

haha WTF! My friend and I were joking just yesterday that we've never seen anything besides a P5 and speed 3 w/ speed 3 seats. WOW! They do look comfortable! I must say that Jsayers takes the cake and the "end of thread" factory bolt in and amazing seats!

Rob XX 7 12-16-09 05:33 PM

jsayers are nice, I was thinking about those seats but had never seen them in person to make a decision, then these came about for a good price.

The only issue with the 3 seats is that while I measured and the distance from the top of the cushion to the steering wheel and it was the same, the seat is almost flat where FC seats dip down or are on a slope. So you feel a little bit propped up in them.
I am going to play with them over the winter and see if I can get them to slope a little bit, even if I have to give them to my upholstery guy.

bondospecial 12-17-09 11:01 AM

^i actually hate how the rx7 seat slopes backwards, it kills my lower back. So the speed 3 seat being flatter, is appealing. Is the speed 3 seat a direct bolt in? How tall are you and do you have okay head clearance in the more propped up position?

Rob XX 7 12-17-09 12:10 PM

if your legs are tight to the wheel now you dont want a seat that will prop you up even higher, im 5'8-5'9 so Im no giant.
They were not a bolt in, I had to have custom brackets made.
