Post pics of cars you have painted
We all like to show off sometimes, so heres your chance. post pictures of cars or parts that you have painted. Dont forget to write a little info, ie color code or the name of the color you sprayed, type of gun used, etc. ive seen a few sweet rattle can jobs floating around out there too so feel free to post those also. who knows you might learn a thing or two by posting in here...
I will start. I Did this for JTP (hope you dont mind me whoring out your car) a couple of years ago before his superstar status. http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...after-Copy.jpg i brightened the pic a little, had to start it out good! http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...opdoorjamb.jpg http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...X7/fcrear2.jpg http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...pshopfront.jpg if you look at the car on the lift its hyperteks before it was hyperteks. http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...7/fcgrafB4.jpg and the before shot. the paint is scion xb green. it was shot with a sata digital 2. |

^why you decide to strip that paint on your car bro? it looked pretty nice before.
|
I have shot 3 convertibles, no pictures of them in this computer, but I have some of my own that I also sprayed.
my car, paint is 10 years old but pictures are from the end of this summer. DuPont single stage custom mixed Imron over DuPont URO prime, shot with a DeVilbiss GTi with a millenium 2000 prototype test cap. I really dont have any during photos in the computer, they are actually on 35mm and I would have to scan them. Could not afford a digital camera back then! I know the bumper does not match in some of these pics, I borrowed it from my TII coupe as it was already cut for a FMIC, this winter the car gets its full S5 conversion treatment so I will paint it all then. Original paint in jambs and underhood as well. http://robx-7.nopistons.com/d/2382-1/lip2+011.jpg http://robx-7.nopistons.com/d/2262-1/rj+005.jpg http://robx-7.nopistons.com/d/2268-1/rj+007.jpg http://robx-7.nopistons.com/d/2256-1/rj+001.jpg Teknics car, DuPont Hot Hues Lemon Glow with DuPont Imron 500S clear, over DuPont URO prime. Shot with a DeVilbiss GFG 670PLUS gun. Hood is propped open in the painted shots- latch was missing when I painted the car so it would not stay shut. http://robx-7.nopistons.com/d/476-1/cddff704d057.jpg http://robx-7.nopistons.com/d/148-1/3ae5f88a7fd1.jpg http://robx-7.nopistons.com/d/166-1/320294fc32cb.jpg http://robx-7.nopistons.com/d/168-1/323526e3d39f.jpg http://robx-7.nopistons.com/d/200-1/457795ebadf7.jpg http://robx-7.nopistons.com/d/364-1/6744bb32e608.jpg http://robx-7.nopistons.com/d/370-1/8360dea2f6db.jpg http://robx-7.nopistons.com/d/70-2/09a133375f12.jpg |

Great work Rob. You must be a pro, you have too much knowledge to be a on the side kinda guy. The black still looks amazing, ive only heard stories about how tough imron is, being in california they outlawed that stuff years ago lol.
|
I hobby with cars, I pro on boats.
I feel bad for california- I believe its all water based paint now too? Water based is supposed to be the shit once you know how to paint and deal with it, but lets see how it holds up in harsh conditions. |
Not all of ca is water born, but its going that direction fast. water based crap requires driers or long waiting periods. you cant spray over it while its still wet! i have seen some sweet water based jobs, but i am afraid of the late 80s early 90s peeling paint that gm was cursed with.... water based.

^what my FC looked like when I bought it a few years ago. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...8/DSCF2125.jpg ^sanded down the shitty primer job to find lots of black sharpie all over the car, as well as even shittier body work on the passenger side. Still yet to fix that but sanded and prepped the car for paint. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...8/DSCF2177.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...8/DSCF2174.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...8/DSCF2180.jpg ^Shot the entire car in Krylon. 8-12 cans of rattle can krylon primer followed by 8-12 cans of Krylon Satin Black rattle can. Only the primer got a wet sand, final 2 coats of color applied within an hour of each other and with no wetsanding. Fenders/hood/bumpers all being replaced so wasnt too concerned with how they turned out. |
the first pic the clear was faded, But as Hypertek always wets his car down b4 a pic.... water does wonders... and some chips on the drivers door.
http://c2.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...f023ee39a5.jpg I'm going to do 95% of the body work my self, and I'll take it to a shop, for the real paint job. But I'm going to wet sand and putting some Gloss, or some Safety Zone Orange... |

its penskee sp? yellow and mercedes benz silver. I had to paint it totally assembled. it was a pain, we couldnt flip it because it was to heavy for the stand the dang thing would act like it was going to flip if you rotated it! 100% cast iron block and heads! its a 426 hemi bored and stroked to 490. 663 hp 673tq on pump gas! http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...allenhemi1.jpg http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...allenhemi4.jpg http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...allenhemi8.jpg http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...allenhemi9.jpg http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...enstruck10.jpg heres a link to it on the Dyno http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rr1uDRIIkjg This truck is insane. The ITBs were 11k alone. I dont even want to know how much the truck cost. Once again it was sprayed with the sata digital 2. |

Sweet thread, really great job fellas.
I want to try to do some painting myself, I have a toyota truck to practice on. So what are you guys set up? What type of gun? the $500 one or the $100 one? How big are your compressors?, what type of filters you running to keep the water out? Yes, i'm a body/paint rookie. Thanks |
i have a 19 gallon husky compressor and its no good. It looses pressure too fast after justabout 2 minutes of spraying, making my job harder... I have 4 water traps setup from homedepot...water still gets thru after awhile..:(
I think shops use as least a32 gallon compressor with 4hp? and use a big water trap [$400] .. A cheap hvlpgun will work fine if your just spraying simple solid colors, but if your going to spray a metallics, youll need a really good hvlp gun, my anest Iwata was $600.. Youll need a a good clear gun too, one that sprays fast is best. |
I have a 60 gallon 2 stage compressor, i dont remember the brand, and a pair or sata digital 2's. both were in the 700 dollar range when i bought them. they are very good guns but spray a little slower than others. i also have the finish line kit that eastwood had on sale for like 100 bucks. those are ok, i have sprayed with them but dont prefer them. As for water traps i use the devilbiss in line water separator, its pretty dry where i live and i drain my compressor regularly so i can get away with only that.
To paint the engine bay one the civic above i used a 10 gallon craftsman compressor and a sata with slow reducer to make sure it wouldnt dry to quickly while i waited for air pressure to build up. Theres more to painting than the equipment. so if you have any more questions you can post them in here or pm me. |

Have you guys ever used that dupli-color paint shop system that is avialable at advance??Or are they crap? |
Contrary to thier name HVLP guns require alot of CFM to keep going, which can be a problem for someone with a small compressor and tank.
I will put my DeVilbiss plus gun up against any gun on the market as I have tried them all and have a "money is no object" mindset when buying spray guns, I own about a dozen guns at this time but they have different purposes, along with 2 air brushes. You must also have high flow hoses and fittings so that your compressor is not working harder to push air through the lines |
oh yes, the devilbiss plus, its a high quality non hvlp gun that moves alot of material really quickly with high transfer rates (less waste). i did a clear job on a corvette with the plus, i could hardly keep up.. satas are slooow. haha. I really liked that gun, Rob, do you use it as your primary gun?
|
the plus gun also recieved approval in the toughest of states- its that efficient, and requires much less CFM then others, about half of my other HVLP guns.
I use it so much I only use my other guns for primer and my smaller touch up guns. Which my touch up gun of choice lately has been a DeVilbiss SRI-W, that thing can put out a 6-8" fan depending on what your spraying- perfect for bumpers, jambs, and other smaller parts. |
I use a 80 gal 2 stage devilbiss compressor puts out 22cfm max! with about 5ft of vertical copper piping, then another 6ft of horizontal copper piping into a $200 water trap , then 4ft of copper piping into my decent dryer , thats were i hook up my air lines. My dura block guns require 12 cfm.

the devilbiss has really come down in price from when it came out, you can get it now really cheap and it only draws 9cfm, even my Sharpe DryAire system has come down in price from the $585 I paid for it originally, now you can find it for like $200 cheaper.
