My TII Build
Finally get to start my own build thread. When I bought the car it had an oil leak. Thought it was coming from the oil cooler lines. Turns out it was between the rear rotor housing and the rear iron. Had another Turbo II motor so I figured I would put it in. Finally got the car to my dad's garage yesterday. Started getting the harness off and labeling it to get ready to pull it. Here are a few pics from today when I started.

All that is left to get is the exhaust, transmission, and motor mounts unbolted and it will be ready to come out. Going to work on it some more tomorrow. Should have pics then too. |
Update as of today. I got the old motor out and got the other in but not bolted up. Had some things come up and couldn't finish. Gonna try and get it bolted up and wired up tomorrow.
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/3...ttachmentn.jpg Sorry about the crappy pic. Took it with my blackberry because I forgot the camera. |
Nice. What are your plans for the car?
Right now I'm just putting the other TII motor I had laying around. Just want to get it running so that I can drive it lol.
Haha ya I understand man, I've been doing my first rebuild and swap so It's been a little over 9 months trying to get the funds together for the build, It sucks not having my FC.
Yea thats me. I'm right at a year now and am finally getting it done. It's no fun to look at it and know it doesn't run. It's really depressing actually.
I wish you the best of luck!
Thanks man. Going to go try and finish it up today after work. Hope everything goes well.
Once again another update. Got the motor in the car, bolted to the transmission and motor mounts. Gotta finish connecteing the wiring harness tomorrow and changing injectors over. Sorry about the crapp pic from the blackberry again. Keep getting in a hurry and forgetting the camera at home. More to come tomorrow.

Finally got it all in and finished today minus a few little things. Got all the fluids and everything in it today and started to crank it but it wouldn't do anything but hit a little. Started to get worried thinking firing might be off. Changed the plug wires around but just made things worse. Was smoking pretty bad out of the exhaust at one point but we kept trying. Motor hadn't been cranked in at least 2 years that I know of. Then finally it cranked but died. Did it 2 more times. Third times a charm they say. It cranked and ran. Timing was a little off. Set the timing and it idles on its own but high. Gotta check for vac leaks tomorrow it idles at about 3k rpms. Finally got it running though. Now for the pics.
Almost everything together. http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/4522/1013054.jpg Smoke I was talking about. Would do it everytime it fired til it finally cranked. http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/332/1013079.jpg http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/157/1013074.jpg Haha. Me, Craig, and Michael http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/8396/1013070.jpg http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6946/1013069.jpg A little more exhaust smoke. http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/1957/1013080t.jpg Getting a little pissed. haha http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/5250/1013060.jpg Everything together. http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/97/1013055v.jpg |
Well it has been a pretty long time since I have posted anything about the car. I figured I would update some. Nothing major has changed. The car needs a clutch as of right now and it will basically be ready to drive. I finally finished sanding and painting it. It looks like a completely different car.
Pics: During the sanding I found a pink star on each door under the camo. Pic of passenger side. http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/3860/pinkfn.jpg Pic of drivers side with windows taped and ready for paint. http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/2...forepaint2.jpg Finished product just need to pull the tape and paper off. http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/4381/1stcoat.jpg http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/2212/1stcoat2.jpg http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/1414/1stcoat3.jpg Not to bad I don't think considering I had never painted before and the paint was just some thinned down paint from lowes. I thought I had pics of it with the paper and tape off. I also stripped the white/pink spray paint off of the wheels back to the original aluminum which helped the look of the car too. I'll try to get some in the next few days. Here is a before/after shot: http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/6604/img00085.jpg http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/1020/img00083o.jpg After: http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/4381/1stcoat.jpg |
good job on the paint!
Thanks. I was really surprised that I did that well considering I had never tried to paint a car before. I am proud of it for sure.
Did you paint it right there outside? I'm surprised it doesn't have bugs stuck all over it.

Finished product: http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/9820/rx71.jpg http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/2985/rx7w.jpg Now all I need to do is sand and buff it to get a little better shine. Other than that the paint is finished for qutie a while. |
looks dope man good job
Thanks. I just need to get a clutch in it and fix a few minor problems and I'll finally be able to drive it full time.
Did you spray a clear coat or is that just a single stage? What kind of paint did you use?
Its just single stage. It was a 1 gallon can of gloss black indoor/outdoor oil based Rustoleum I bought from lowes for $26 and then I used about a pint and a half of acetone to thin the gallon and then just sprayed it on. I've still not finished yet. I'm going to sand it with a really fine grit sand paper and then buff it and that should bring more shine out of it.
How many coats did you put on?
Id say do like a 2-part wet sand, first with 1500, then with 2000. Then use Mcguire's new 105 and 205. that should look pretty decent. |
I put 3 coats on just for good meaure.
That's kind of what I figured I would do. I'm not in a huge hurry for it right now though haha. My main concern is getting a clutch for it and getting the small problems fixed so I can finally start driving it. |
A+ bro, way to bring her back to life!!!
Thanks. It's still a work in progress but I am getting there. I've noticed I stay a lot more motivated when I accomplish something even if its small like an oil change. It just feels good that some of the things I am doing to the car aren't just repairs to keep it running constantly.
Great job and thank goodness you painted it!
^^^ Just about to reply with the same response lol
