My DIY wheel reapinting project
Well half a year ago my dad got me some rims for my car. And the condition they were in was pretty bad (but can't complain when there free) Other than that ive let them sit in my storage house till now. So today I took the rims out and im planning on cleaning them up and repaint them. Its going to be my first time doing somthing like this but I hope it'll turn out ok. Here are pics

gl with the project and i recommend trying to find some acid. the acid that paint shop will use and acid wash them real good if you acid wash them you don't need to sand them. i painted my rims without sanding them just acid washing. they came out great. cept for one we didn't acid wash it so it had a lot of fish eying due to oils still on the rim.

Yeah, make sure you prep them properly. Looking good though, what colour are you painting them?

gl with the project and i recommend trying to find some acid. the acid that paint shop will use and acid wash them real good if you acid wash them you don't need to sand them. i painted my rims without sanding them just acid washing. they came out great. cept for one we didn't acid wash it so it had a lot of fish eying due to oils still on the rim. You should dismount the tires first.

ahh quality good luck mate, ill be keeping an eye on how it goes. im going to redo my enkeis as the laquer has started comming off.
im not too sure wether to paint them myself or get th centres powder coated. what kind of paint are you using? |

don't be to heavy in spots with the paint otherwise they will be a nightmare to balance. fyi balance them after painting. the acid i was talking about isn't that expensive at all. i can't remember how much but i know its not a lot

I like the design of the wheel. Is it a 30-40 offset? Keeping them polished, or painting them a different color? What color is the car? Take your time.
You don't need to dismount the tires to paint. Here's what I do... Take some thin cardboard. A cereal box works great. Cut the large sides (front and back) off in as straight of a line as possible. Cut those in half so you have four 4x12-ish strips. Wrap those strips around the bead of the wheel. Between the tire and lip of the wheel. Tape the strips together to form sort of a ring around the wheel. Now tape some newspaper or plastic around the rest of the tire. You may need more than 1 cereal box, but this method works better than using up 10 rolls of masking tape. Plus it's reusable for multiple wheels. |

Don't hang out in the 2nd gen section much, but I thought you might get some good info from a thread I put up in 1st gen sections when I refurbed my SA waffle wheels.

I think I used the same Duplicolor Silver wheel paint. It exaclty matched the color of the new waffle wheel I had for comparison. Its my spare. |

why did you even bother to tape around the rim like that??? Tape is dirt cheap, one roll of the green stuff is more than enough to cover the entire side wall of four tires....unless those are junk tires..
I just did some wheels in Dupli-Color Wheel Paint, but I chose the graphite or whatever. I did the cardboard thing first but found the tape to be much easier and quicker. just stick notecards between the lip and tire all around the wheel. done and done. |
Here's another tip:
Dismount the freakin tires! No masking required then. |
What if they're your only means of transportation. As in, you don't have another car or set of tires? Just run cardboard around the lips and use a couple trash bags to seal the tire.
Plus dismounting and remounting tires adds $20 to the project. You can take a rag and acetone to the overspray and it comes right off. |

ive painted a set of 5zigen fn01rc on my old 240sx using the same duplicolor silver wheel paint and the same thing you did.. *prior owner used paint stripper on em wanting to strip the surface and polish em (which looks awesome on fn01s by the way) but they had tons of residue i just sanded em and sprayed em and they came out great, tho they didnt perfectly match the rear set of fn01s i had but it didnt bother me.
tho you might get some paint chips when you go through tire mountings etc.. and the paint can get stained/hard to clean if you dont always whip em down.. |
