Gloat. Baller diff!

Well for $200 it's getting hot tanked, primed, painted, bearings installed, backlash set, ect. I've never set the backlash on a diff and for the price it just seemed right. I'm installing it on the car, he is just doing the guts.

Cannot wait to install it, first event is next Sat.

Rob XX 7 Apr 5, 2009 08:28 AM

they dont get much to set up diffs, and if you were putting that money into it you would pay to let someone else set it up too.

I just did seals and bearings in mine, without touching the diff itself, and it was close to $400 in parts from mazda. Guy charged me $125 to set it up and it was worth every penny.

exactly... if I add up the parts I'm damb near $1600 so whats a few bucks to KNOW it's in right.

Looks good.

Have someone take pics at the event.

pistones Apr 7, 2009 04:58 PM

it took me two tries to get the backlash right, it's worth getting it done right.

blimp Apr 8, 2009 12:14 AM

very expensive, I don't wanna talk about it... I have more $$$ into the rear end than I bought the entire car for. :icon_no2:

however I'll never have to worry about my rear again and the OS is FAR superior to other aftermarket diffs.

They are +27 I'm going to try the rears on the front... want to run the set-up that your thinking of.. -but I do not wanna go wide fenders unless they are metal and no vents... I'm considering corksport overs though. Hop on that set of wheels!

and before anyone goes "meh it's an NA" it's gets worse... it's going to have PISTONS

DIFF IS IN!

Took a bit longer than I thought... about 3 1/2 hours taking my time... I could probably do it in 2 hours. No real snags during the job I PB'ed everything a few days ahead of time and I certainly would NOT want to do it without an Impact gun.

The diff is noisy and I can certainly feel and hear whats going on out back more with the diff bushings.
I do hear a bit of a "white noise" from the rear when at speed and a bit of rumble under acceleration. I can also VERY distinctly hear the diff locking and unlocking when I'm on and off the throttle, it takes some getting used to. Drifts like a dream, very smooth engagement and predictable. Only issue is that I noticed one of the brand new diff seals is leaking a bit of fluid, I'm hoping that after a few miles and heat cycles it sures itself up. I'm going to drive it to work tomorrow then have a look.

I'll post install pics and a more detailed review when I get more miles on it...

Alex Rodriguez Apr 10, 2009 02:32 PM

yeah man when you get a chance snap a pic of the wheels up front and i am with you on the metal wide fronts , I cant stand theses zip tied fiberglass junks everyone is rolling on.

I had a set of fiberglass fender and i though they were absolute junk after i tried to make them work with oem body.

I will subscribe to the thread i want to see them wheels up front

rxdrift7 Apr 10, 2009 07:06 PM

Nice diff. Car looks good, another example of how coils and some pretty good fitment can make a car look good. :)

Alex,

I'll throw up some pics tomorrow of one of the rears on the front.

Hypertek Apr 11, 2009 08:54 PM

you did break it in right? slow figure 8s for a few minutes.. than change the fluid after a few hundred miles.. When you change fluid, add an lsd addictive. With the nismo LSD i put in my old s13 it was like that, after a few changes + addictive, it went quiet. Looks good though, our cars arent exactly pretty underneath lmao. MMR has a few items I would like to pick up myself.

Alex Rodriguez Apr 11, 2009 09:29 PM

man how pimp it would of looked if you painted the rear sub frame

There is no figure 8 or real break in period with the OS Giken unit.

I have a extra rear subframe and trialing arms that are getting the full treatment... sandblasted, powder coated and a bunch of goodies, I was kinda in a rush to get the diff in for the season opener.
