MY cup holder Mod

i have searched some of the cup holder threads and thought that most kinda sucked. i didn't want the ones that went under the radio because god forbid i stopped short the drink would spill all over my new radio bezel or i might punch it when i shift.
I also never liked the pep boys special. the aftermarket ones that you would hang on something. those were all unacceptable. So when i was working at the dealership i was in a new car and saw these inserts in the shape of a cup. they were brilliant! i first wedged it behind the shifter in the button panel but it just looked like crap. So i was thinking of a way to either make it look really OEM or hide it.
Here's what i did. i took a cup holder insert from a 05-09 Pathfinder. it's made of rubber and can fit larger american sized cups. cut a hole in the armrest console and stuffed it in. what's nice is the shape of the cup holder insert is tapered at the bottom so it just wedges itself in place. It only comes out underneath like a half inch so it doesn't touch the floor pan, and the lid closes perfectly.
I have a cup holder tray from a miata and i thought that was a close fit but it required trimming and wouldn't have any traction against the cup. it's just a plastic tray with two holes in it. i wanted to use two of the pathfinder inserts but they are too big to fit two together. unfortunately i wasn't able to make it look like factory but at least it will work well.

So basically the total cost was very little. i had to buy the hole saw and arbor. I used a 3" hole saw. i don't know how much the cup holder inserts costs because i didn't pay for them. they wandered out of the truck some how.:dunno: I'm sure some of you can go to the dealership and "road test" a pathfinder. Or go to the parts department and buy them.

not bad, but the lid will close on the cup when you drive... I imagine it will be kinda flopping around while you drive, no?

pistones 07-21-09 05:29 PM

not really it tilts back, and if you have a large cup the top will hold the lid open. i have driven with the lid open without cups in and it doesn't want to close because of the angle when it's open.

oh, cool then. Nice spot for it.

Tim from london motorworks gave me a good idea for a cup holder, a rotor on the floor.

i used the cheap cup holder things from walmart. got 4 of them for about 2 bucks. they hook to stuff which is kind of cool. i use then where the glove box is and sometimes on the center console. i'll get pics up of what im talkin about.

I was thinking about getting the walmart ones and see if they will hook up to the back bins. Not sure if it will work at all, but just a thought

the problem with the rotor on the floor is the drink will be on the floor too. i don't really like taking my eyes off the road to reach my drink from the passenger floor. Especially with my seat belt on.

the reason i don't want to use the hook type holders is they are supposed to be hooked onto the window so you can reach it. the purpose is kinda defeated when you put it out of reach on the glove box.

i don't know how so many people have cup holders that are out of arms reach. don't you want to be able to reach for your drink when you are cruising along and paying attention to the road? unless that is just a holder for your drink until you get to your destination?

pretty sure you can mod it to hold two cups :)

pistones 07-24-09 05:42 PM

i didn't want give up the little storage space i do have. my computer is in the glove box already. plus if my passenger has a cup they can hold it, so when they spill something on my recaros i can yell at them.

im a old man so I tend to like things comfortable, but in a FC hold the drink in your hands and leave the cup holders to the mini vans!

jake1191 07-26-09 10:29 AM

You could always just buy a bottle with a cap from the quickie mart like i always do then hit up the drive thru and skip on their drink. Plus you always get the brand of drink you want. Then it will also fit perfectly between your right hip and the console.

if you have time to sip on your drink while your driving your rx7 your doing something wrong :P you need to go faster

Rob XX 7 07-27-09 06:38 AM
