That describes probably half the people around with so-called "project" cars. I often wonder how many of them start the project, realize that doing the work is a bit harder than what they see on TV, and then just refuse to admit they can't handle it. It was a very odd situation indeed. I don't understand the thought process of any of those involved. In the end I'm sure that the materials were sold for scrap but I would have much preferred the car to sit in my driveway, because I would have built it.

Not even kidding a little. There is a common problem with the automatic transmission governor (so it is called in the DeLorean world) were a few random components fail. One being a capacitor, another being a transistor. Easy fix with 5 minutes and a soldering iron.

Everyone has one of those stories. Mine involved a retard with a '53 Chevrolet pickup with the original inline 6 and a 3 speed manual transmission. It all worked, but the owner wanted to put in a 327 and TH350. That truck/engine/transmission sat at the shop I worked at for years and years. Each time she came by, I asked her about it and kept throwing offers. She said it belonged to her dad and she'd never sell it. She eventually paid the shop to pull the original engine and transmission (I did the job), then it sat for another year. A local police officer came and picked it up one day on a flatbed, and I started asking questions. He said she needed the money for it, and she sold EVERYTHING to him for $1k. Inside the truck was a full disc brake conversion kit too.

Bitch didn't even bother to ask me, who had been interested in that thing for years...

I guess these people are too proud to admit defeat.

there's alot of them around here also.

a few weeks back on craigslist there was a few shells of cars from 1920's through the 30's, they wanted $2k-3500 for each of them. they were totally rusted out shells stored in the elements for almost a century, hardly worth restoring.

No, but the FB/FC door handle/lock mechanisms are notoriously easy to open, no key neccessary...

anyone who owns these cars know how well mazda did at protecting them. i mean all you need to do is pop out the window channel and the lock rod is right there... i should make a shield to place over it as a theft deterrent and sell it.

strangely i've seen a few 7's with pry marks on the door handles and punched out lock cylinders... i guess the people who broke into those cars had no clue how easy they are to break into..

I caught some kids trying a coat hanger through the A-pillar/top of the door on my old '83 once, they didn't get in but sure messed up the paint job on the door frame. If they knew how easy it really was they would have been long gone before I got there...

I heard stories for several years about a cheap FD sitting in a field near a barn about 2 hours from my place (people know me as an "RX7 guy"). I just ASSumed that like all the other "oh, it's a 93" stories, it was another FC left to sit in a field and not worth 2500-3000 dollars.

Fast forward a couple years and a friend of mine is looking for an FD project car, follows up on the same lead I'd ignored and whaddya know, 93 FD, near perfect interior, needs a paint job and a few pieces, complete with a running BREW and tranny (separate, but complete).

Still kick myself for not going to see, he made it into quite a car though.

Local yard donates it to fire/rescue where they proceed to cut it up with their various rescue tools as a demonstration. What's left gets scrapped and recycled.
A Delorean rotting away?! Those things are stainless steel top and fiberglass bottom! Every one I've seen looks like brand new! Now I know every part isn't stainless on the car, but I thought I'd just share my love too for the car that's built to last in new england.

Ps scrapped? Really? Some people just don't know what they have.

"Rotting" is figurative, sort of. Remember, the frame is a very thin mild steel poorly coated with epoxy. The epoxy loves to crack, letting in moisture, then trapping it. Then the frame rots invisibly under the epoxy. Common areas are the front crash area, rear TAB, rear engine cradle, etc. So while the underbody is fibreglass and the outer body is 304 stainless, everything else in the car is typical steel (minus the aluminum transmission, engine, etc.). Every fastener rusts, causing the damn rivnuts to just spin in their fiberglass holes. So ironically, rust is a massive problem for the DeLorean.

These cars are and have for about 5 years been slowly starting to level out, and in the case of factory complete TIIs are on the upslope in value...

You guys should see what the market is like in MN. You can barely talk people out of base model non-turbo cars that have no engine or transmission for $500 cash around here...

TIIs that long ago spit apex seals through their turbos and are in need of body work are fetching $2500 overnight here....

Gotcha Aaron. Still can't be worse than these piece of crap Fords here. Lost the spare tire well (hanging by the wire harness) and exhaust rotted and resonator hit driveshaft Wednesday. Wore a grove in the driveshaft but didnt break through on way home. Ironically, my Mazda that is 14 years older is in way better shape.

Awaiting these sweet delorean pics!

As promised, here are a few pictures. I took these in about 1998, when digital cameras produced images of about the quality you see here. Off hand I think I used a Kodak DC 20, which a whopping resolution of 493 x 373 pixels and a whole 1MB of memory, capable of storing 8 images before needing to be transferred via a serial cable using a TWAIN driver that was VERY frustrating. I literally tried to buy this car from the time I was 16 until I was 20.











The stainless is still straight and with a bit of Windex, would look new again. The underside is a different story.

I've been a DeLorean enthusiast since the early '80s and once I'm doing restoring my '76 Cosmo, I'll finally buy one.

Must be a midwest thing. I got my TII with a blown motor for $2500 as well, and I thought that was a decent price

call the city, the idiot wont bail it out, a non running car at an inpound or auction wont go for very much money and i doubt anyone at an auction would know a damn thing about an rx7 except for the bad stereotypes and everyone will stay away from it and you can get it for cheap.. might be a dick move but... TII!

damn right, those peugot 3 litre magnesium block engines were pure garbage in the shape of a motor! 83 miles per hour was in fact about their top speed, lol...

we used to service a few deloreans at the volvo dealer i worked at since they had the same powerplant as volvo used in that same timeframe.
