how to remove paint on rims (s5 t2)

Well i've notice a couple people have had turbo rims for a s5 have had it painted black. This is for those who want to remove that paint and make em look new.

Remember everybody's rim is different read instructions on the can to avoid damage, im am not responsible for any damage this is just how I done it, would not use on chrome rims!

Before

Items needed:
paint stripper (tar-strip works best)
sponge or paper towels
Wheel clear coat
Wheel cleaner

Since we're using paint stripper its gonna remove the paint as well as the clear coat on them, which is good because it will leave a nice shine of bare rim but it needs clear coat to protect it.

First spray painted rim with paint stripper on rim and let it sit for at least 10mins, you should see it bubble like this

After a couple of minutes wipe paint with a sponge or rag. For mesh wheels with alot of veins use a firm toothbrush to get between those tight areas.

Once u wiped off as much as u can wash with soap and water. Check if you missed areas, if so dry rim and apply more painted stripper on those areas.

This is what mine looked like with out clear coat. A good before and after pic

Now when apply clear coat to rims you want to spray on evenly, I sprayed about 5 coats of clear on. Wait at least ten mins to apply another coat after the 1st one.

With clear on

Remember kids wear gloves u don't want this stuff on your skin!

Looks good! How long did it take to restore all four?

GuiltySoul 04-17-12 12:19 PM

Im gonna say about 4 hours or 5 its the veins that make it a pain

brian_skotch 04-17-12 12:53 PM

Yeah I bet. Mesh seems like a pain! Especially those little triangle areas by the center caps

Mar Hyde "Tal Stripper" is good too..aircraft grade.
I did a hood in like 20 minutes!

Grab some black trash bags next time. Spray the parts as you would and seal them inside the trash bags. This keeps the fumes around the wheel and helps prevent the stripper from evaporating to it work faster and goes farther. Also scuffing or scratching the surface before spraying will jumps start the process.
