How do I put on 30mm rear overfenders without rivets?

Breh's--

I have some 30mm overfenders I want to put on and I want to smooth them in like they are part of the body. Should I use some sort of epoxy and then kitty hair? What is the best way so I don't have that riveted look?

Rob, some input would be perciated.

I was told to use the same epoxy/glue that the OEM's use when putting dually fender flares on...but I didn't listen i "liked the rivets" at the time....now I'm welding up 20 some odd rivet holes...stupid me.

Yep panel bond epoxy is the ticket. Bear in mind you will *never* flawlessly (more over - permanently) bond dissimilar materials. You will get a read through line eventually given the different expansion rates and the fact that the car is bouncing down the road.

But panel bond works best. Fusor, 3M and Norton all make excellent two part epoxies for this.

awesome. I assume I can get this at advance right?

Dltreezan 03-09-10 08:59 AM

oh and do I have to sand down to the metal or can I bond it to the paint?

Rob XX 7 03-09-10 11:43 AM

no you will want to get the panel bonding adhesive from a auto body supply.
You might need a special applicator gun to dispense it so if you have a buddy at a auto body shop ask to borrow theirs.

You really want both surfaces clean of paint

flawsome

i used kitty hair for my fenders. Also, dont expect the mold to hold up forever. Mine already has cracks, possibly because my mold was sand too thin?? anyways, it doesnt bother me too much.

Here's a pic by pic of how I did mine..

Attachment 711393

Cut out, welded, painted, then I fiberglassed over the lip to make sure it was sealed and strong.

I also traced out the fender to show me where I would have to grind off the paint to apply the panel bond.

2 years later I still haven't shaved them, but I'll get around to it..

Rob XX 7 03-09-10 02:42 PM

personally if you are not going for a all out show car I say bond them and leave it be, dont fill in the seam.

A small seam line will age better then a panel of filler trying to smooth the line in.

E_Dub 03-09-10 11:04 PM

Well my friend and I put the same flares on our cars at the same time and he shaved his, its nice to clean up the lines and with the proper materials there's nothing to worry about. One of my fenders is cocked up about 1/8 of an inch at the back exposing panel bond and stuff I'd like to shave them in just so they look proper.

did you get wheels/rubber to accommodate the need?

I have front aero as well but I'm in the process of repairing it..it's an old Rmagic front bumper with the quad lights. Matches the shine auto Rmagic sides and rear. I like the YOURS Sports rear wing with the widebody it flows nice.

the hood is some peice I was messing with. Now in the trash...

I am using rmagic sides and front fenders, 30mm rear overs (rmagic rears look odd as hell), cf rear diffuser with an apexi single and running a factory al. hood with a CF naca duct in the middle for the intake (similar to a viper or a scoot hood).

I am also making a custom front end with some wild integrated headlight design.

Dltreezan 03-12-10 09:18 AM

btw fenders are not bolted on the car. You have no idea how many times I would come home and chase my fenders that were blowing off in the wind.

t24todd 03-12-10 09:24 AM

um that looks uhh....whats the word, and on a vert too???

Hypertek 03-12-10 09:32 AM

once he gets the stance dialed in with coilovers, it will be cool

Dltreezan 03-12-10 09:41 AM

lol its great, I dont even need jacks to get underneath it...
