Graphite Satin FC....Some of it anyway...

Will start the thread by saying, ex 350 chevy project....

It was a brief period where we thought we'd give it a go, then we couldn't keep it cool so we binned that idea and went back to the project board.

Satin finish, it's the way to go, this paint job looks DIRTY... when I was spaying the engine bay, the silver we added was separating and rolling off, then once I'd layed down the final coat, and left overnight to settle...it was about as close to 400 grit wet n dry.

As far as the heart goes, it'll be a series 5 13b turbo, 650 Holley set up for a blow through. Have converted the steering rack to manual to get rid of any unwanted pumps pully's etc, binned the AC, and de-loomed the front end.

As far as the holly goes, yeah I know, why not go injection...why! Why go gloss when there is satin...

All the mods that have been done, have been via threads from various sites, the CNC work, that's been done by a friend of mine.

So far, so good. Going to need the after market turbo manifold but had a feeling that was on the books, the question is, where can I find one with tuned length (equal length) runners? How much of a difference does it make?

dkwasherexd 01-10-09 01:54 AM

clean. I can see its like a s13 where the harness tucks under the fender. Just make sure your tire wont rub on your wires if you were to slam your car..

Nice project. Pretty unique motor setup, I like. What front bumper is that? And as far as equal length runners goes, I don't think it matters very much As long as the lengths aren't drastically different. People have made some pretty big numbers on cast log-style manifolds. You'll probably be able to find out more in the single turbo section.

de-loomed

I've run all the loom under the guard myself, as far as wiring goes in the engine bay, I'm hoping just to be able to see the wires powering the coils.

The front bumper is a custom fiberglass 'Frantik' bumper, it came froma guy in West Auckland, New Zealand.

I've got some pic's of the holley and intake manifold, will post them up soon.

This is the holley, it looks huge compared to everything in the engine bay...

The green hatch is the other project, 13b semi PP... It's a 1979 Mazda 323, I think they were a GLC or GLE in the US of A....

I'm not 100% positive but I'm pretty sure the Racing Beat road race headers are tuned: http://racingbeat.com/FRmazda2.htm

KhanArtisT 01-10-09 03:27 PM

All that work and you're using a 1970s stock S5 turbo? :icon_no2: Put a T4 on it!

orange 01-10-09 05:58 PM

T4...

I think that could be the go, I'm doing everything else, I may as well do the turbo at the same time.

KhanArtisT 01-10-09 06:33 PM

With the stock turbo you will probably have boost creep anyway unless you port the crap out of the wastegate with a porting mill or die grinder. Not to mention a lot of them are usually shot or close to it.

orange 01-10-09 07:10 PM

boost creep

boost creep shouldn't be a problem, I had a plate cut at a local water jet company which goes on the waste gate side of the turbo, it is 12mm plate, basically gives the waste-gate 12mm extra space to open up into. Is the same shape as the plate that covers the waste-gate on the stock turbo's, but it just like a gasket, except 12mm thick and 15mm wide with holes for the bolts to pass through.
Will post some pics, not so sure my explanation is that great.

ecko 01-10-09 09:40 PM

very clean its coming out nice

I haven't actually confirmed this myself but when searching for info on porting the wastegate I ran into several threads where people claimed that with the wastegate actuator spring completely compressed the flapper only goes about 2-3mm past the backing plate so a thinner backing plate may not be enough. I ported the hell out of my backing plate and wastegates (52mm) and still have slight boost creep (couple psi).

Of course you won't have to worry if you just go T4 with a nice manifold :)

boost creep Series 5 turbo upgrage.

Ok, here are a few pics of the plate I had done at the local water cutter. I'm hoping this should eliminate any boost creep.

classicauto 01-20-09 07:37 AM

Nice looking plate! But as mentioned, be sure to actually port the opening of the wastegate larger, although given its an S5 turbo, its less prone to boost creep with its inherently larger wastegate, but should be touched up since its apart anyways.........cleaning up the runners in the manifold doesn't hurt either.

Nice looking project though :)

And what bumper is that???

Since you have a flange cut already, you ever consider making a divorced downpipe? That and some porting would help boost creep.

what kind of bumper is that?

FelixIsGod29X 01-21-09 09:38 PM

Hikes those rotor housings in the first set of pics are useless. I can see rust on the edges.

Those housings in the 1st pic are only being used as a dummy block, I've only got 3/4 of the block in there anyway...

single stage paint? or are you planning spraying clear?

It has been cleared, we're going for the satin finish...more a matt than satin though...
