DIY JDM style FTP's.. EASY!!!

I just fabbed these up yesterday. Day off and Rainy day boredom:D
I started with the ftp lens. then went to wally world(wal-mart) and fitted lights. a low beam white light(rectangular) and a day time running light(oval).
bear with me on the iphone pics

Then cut openings for the lights. I left a small piece of plastic between the two lights for stability and to help angle the lights.
Clean the ftp's good before mounting lights.
once they're in I used Quiksteel(quick harding putty) to seal around the light.Worked excellent.
quick tip. do not mix all putty before ready. it dries very quick(in 3-5 mins it will be unworkable)

Not bad a lil more detail on the set up though. How much did the lights cost? And how'd you set up the wiring?

J.MurdaFCs3 01-23-09 02:14 PM

I should have taken more pics.
I used Navigator Fog Lights in "cyber white"( $29.99), thats the rectangular lights that are slightly blue. The daytime running lights are Platinum Burners Series(15.99) plus the putty and you lookin at $55-60 total. They're cheap lights but I was just F'n around cause i was bored. If I did it again I would recommend ordering smaller lights(1x3" and a circular around 35-45mm. no bigger. I had to cut the sides of lens to fit the set-up. None the less, I used the wires it came with to run everything( along with a few m-f connectors)
Run the ground across all four lights in a "daisy chain"(all connected to each other from pass side to driver side). Run the ground under the brace by the hood latch using a nut and bolt. cover in dielectric grease.
I ran the slights so they work as a unit not daytime and other lights separate. If you do this, crimp the two pos wires from the lights together. do this to each ftp. Then run a fuse line to ea light and join them running the wire thru the support into engine bay. I ran the wires thru the firewall in the same hole the speedo cable goes thru. I only did this because I have gauges and wires from other "gadgetry" taking up all the other firewall holes
for the switch i have, one that lights up when on, I had to run a line to and from the lights and a ground. the standard switch is in and out.
I ran a pos wire from the batt to the switch and a line from the switch to the lights. I spliced my ground into another ground for a close gauge(because it is only taking power to light the led in the switch)

Did you try pouring water over em?

Im not a fan of putting fog lights or driving lights behind there because its a waste imo.. they shouldnt be driving or fog lights, but running lights.

This is cheaper cost less then $10 bucks
you get the parts from walmart and home depot
I think it looks a lil more accurate/similar

Dont mind that 240sx side marker in teh pic, i thought i would butcher that at first but than found the lights at walmart which are easier to do.

It involves taking apart the ftp lenses *some of them you can do it the same way you take apart s5 tail lights, you bake them, but some FTP lenses ive noticed you cannot do this to.* You glue the parts inside with adhesive sealant. The bulb is soo small it wont hurt anything. Drill a hole in the back of the lenses to run the wiring and seal it up with the adhesive sealant. You gotta make the wires but its simple. Then you reseal and glue everything up = waterproof. *Tho one of mine does get moisture, Im planning to redue another set whenever i find a good pair of ftp lenses at the junk yard*♦♠

I guess its just a matter of opinion. And yes they are water proof. no dew. that quiksteel is amazing
My lights are as bright as my headlights and it was considerably cheap. yours are just a lil too dull for me. i like your ride tho:bigthumb:

t24todd 01-23-09 04:16 PM

both look pretty good. during the day i just pop out the retractor fuse and turn on the headlights, quick easy and free

Rotary_Knight 01-23-09 06:25 PM

I like both approaches. Maybe when I get some free time and money from school I too shall try this. Good job!

Boosted11 01-23-09 07:48 PM

I would prefer a light that filled up the area a little better, so the OP gets my vote.

NCross 01-23-09 11:23 PM

These lenses are going to melt. I played with fog lights mounted behind my FTPs a few years ago and they got hot and started smoking and turned brown. Try using just a couple of standard turn signal bulbs.

Hypertek 01-24-09 12:50 AM

you dont get in trouble for your license plate? In socal, that would still get busted .

No worrys man yours looks good.

Its not dim at all btw

Mine replace the markers on the bottom

J.MurdaFCs3 01-24-09 11:54 AM

ya. looks much better from that angle.
I haven't gotten pulled over yet, but when I was getting my wheel/tires mounted they dude said he got popped the same way so.... Im working on a LP mount but i really hate the look of it

leftcoastdrifter 01-26-09 10:34 PM

what's the sheet called that you cut the clear pieces out of and where did you get it?

Hypertek 01-26-09 11:13 PM

its florescent ceiling light fixture lense or something.

J.MurdaFCs3 01-27-09 04:45 PM

go to TAP plastics if you have one around there. I used the same stuff for my turn signals.

leftcoastdrifter 01-28-09 01:44 AM

sweet thanks, can i get it at the poor man's performnce shop i.e. Home Depot?

The lenses are not going to melt. They don't even get hot. Just warm.

I don't have anymore pics. I got caught up in the excitement and forgot to take progress pics. I don't even use my headlights anymore except as brights:D

J.MurdaFCs3 02-04-09 11:07 AM

I started making these FTP lens to sell. One version like you see, the other is a duller daytime driving light. I also am making cleared out turn signals and custom gauge pods. Pm me

full-cruise 05-07-09 02:03 AM
