Some of you saw my previous taillight modification.. All red, custom plexi.. Well I did another version yesterday, except I tinted the OEM lenses all red except for a section for the Reverse lights.

I used a junk lense I had off the Rex.. Thinking about actually doing the ones on the car now not 100% sure though. What do you guys think?

I like it. been wanting to do this with my tails but will prob leave the backup lights alone, but want to find some bright LED bulbs for all the lights or maybe even led strips for a newer taillight look

Night shots?

That actually looks really nice. How well does the Reverse light shine through?

My car actually doesn't have reverse lights right now.. Haven't figured out how to wire it up to a tremec..

BUT I have done this on my BMW's in the past the white line I leave open shines white really well and the rest of the lense is red so it still illuminates much like most newer cars.. An LED bulb would probably really shine bright.

So you just sprayed over the orange lens? What did you use? I've got a can of Nightshades red taillight spray I've been holding onto for a while to try to do this with... Does the turn signal light up orange or red?

Dude.. That looks great! So much better than the stock s4 tails. It's very subtle but noticeable to the rx7 freaks.

I actually used "testors" model tail light spray. It matches the OEM red when sprayed over virtually any translucent color. You have to clear coat over it or it will eventually wear off. I have been using it for years on various cars.. The turn signal looks red to me when it is activated.

My BMW- 2 years ago.

Another BMW of mine- Did this this winter.. They were all clear in the center.. looked cheezy.

That's really fantastic. Where do you get the Testor's stuff? There aren't many pro hobby shops around here. And what do you Clear over it with?

I really want to tear the lights apart and put a clear lense in place of the yellow lense. Just need to try and "bake" it apart to investigate

could be done, just not sure where you will find diffused plexi..

driftxsequence 03-14-14 09:17 AM

My plan was to take the yellow out, make a mold, and then fill the mold with plastic. there is a "clear acrylic" kit I've seen before that might be close. I'm sure I could take something over top to give it a frost effect and not 100% clear. It's just not a priority :)

If you take a piece of lexan/plexi/polycarbonate, mask off the outside to keep it glossy, and media blast the inside at a very low pressure holding the gun a good distance away from it, you can give it a satin finish on the inside creating a diffused lens. I've personally done this before with good results when I was making my own clear side marker lenses out of some scrap 1/4" thick polycarbonate.

That stuff turns yellow and breaks as it is not UV protected.

I have used it in my FD tails with no problems although it wasn't directly in sunlight as it was inside the lens it didn't yellow, it was actually pretty sturdy and I was able to bend it with a little heat. Some clear coat could help with UV rays also most clear plastic on cars such as headlights just use that.

I've used testors candy apple red in the past, with automotive clear over it. Works perfectly.

Decided to paint the black part with a satin finish to match the other trim on the car.. I feel like it added a quality..
