86 N/A to TII project - started today

My long awaited n/a to turbo II project is almost complete. Here's the story in a nut shell.......bought a supercharged 91 last year and did a turbo II swap only to learn the harnesses were not plug and play with the 88 TII swap. Bought and sold a Haltech E6X cause I was to lazy to wire it up. Car sat in my garage for about 8 mos. Found a running N/A 86 GXL for $800. Pulled the turbo motor out of the 91 and dropped it into the 86. Today I turned the key for the first time and the car started right up. Now here comes the "almost complete" part. The motor sounds very strong but the turbo smokes when the car comes up to temp. I'll either have to rebuild or buy another turbo. Not blaming the member who sold me the motor but I wish he had told me the turbo smoked before I bought it. Would have been nice to have it rebuilt/replaced while the car was down. Anyway here is a pic of my ride.

does smoke come from the exhaust or from teh turbo? the turbo will smoke for a while as it burns off the oild from our hands and shit. smoke from the exhaust? just let it run for a ocuple of days before crapping on a members cake.

Smoke comes from the turbo. I never removed or touched the turbo especially with oily hands. Not crapping on anyones cake just saying. Overall I'm happy with my purchase just disappointed the car may be down again until I can fix the turbo issue.

looks good. should have kept the haltech IMO but at least you got it up and running. a few critiques if you dont mind...

get a koyo or aftermarket radiator. its a great investment and makes the engine bay look nicer. relocate the battery. also, i also dunno if its a good idea to have your spark plug wires sitting on the intercooler piping like that. those are some nice wires though, i have them on both my cars and are the only ones ill use.

now's the time to upgrade to a s5 turbo since you will be pulling that one anyway. car looks great, you should be happy with it.

Not sure if These cars have them but you might want to check where the oil lines go into the turbo. Maybe theirs a broken washer?

Looks like a solid setup. :icon_tup:

I used the money from the Haltech to help complete my build. I wanted to get a Koyo radiator but ran out of money. However I am using a fan from a 3.8L Ford Taurus. It has two settings....1st one is 2800 cfm and the 2nd is 4000cfm. I have it set on the high setting to make sure the car stays cool. As for the spark plug wires....they only look like they are sitting on the intercooler piping but they are about 2" above the pipe.

the taurus fan is solid. best fan to use IMO...fits the radiator perfectly and works great.

Yeah...I ran the same fan on the RX8 I used to own.

Well the smoke from the turbo has subsided but is still visible every now and then. Anyway I came across another issue today when I tried to drive the car. Whenever I give the car gas (in 1st gear) it begins to rev up and down until I take my foot off the gas pedal. Car is fine at idle so if I had to guess I'd say it is my tps.

Anyone have a working S4 TII TPS f/s?

Zip tied? I would have thrown a fit when it came in the mail. What the hell is wrong with people?

Well I was really hoping it still worked. Since my car has been down for so long it only bothers me a bit. I just talked to the member who sold me the TB & TPS and I'm hoping he'll come thru for me.

Got a new tps from the member who sold me the tb. Cars run alot better but still needs some fine tuning.
