1090 GTUs are they that rare?

I just found a 90 gtus rx7 are they really that rare? I did a search and everything matches it's the real deal. Car is black with black interior I'm not sure if I am going to keep the car I have my rx2 and don't really need another project. Stay tuned car might be forsale. And to mention car is a virgin:)

RotarySupra 10-17-09 09:35 PM

check if its a non re-stamped GTUs, nice find, how many miles? IMO,they a rare, but a non re-stamped 90 GTUs are a little harder to find.

Riki 10-17-09 09:53 PM

Proto motorsports here in riverside let one of those go for $1800 cuz they didnt know it was a GTUs till after they sold it

Yes, they are rare, but they are not collector's items. The Blue Book value of a 90 GXL is actually slightly higher than that of a 90 GTUs in the same condition.

Are you saying that they can't understand Roman letters, and after they sold it somebody told them that the GTUs letters written on the side of the car stand for GTUs? Are they Japanese or something?

How do you tell if the vin was restamped? Car has just over 91,000 and was found in an auction and you could say it was a gift. :)

I don't think I would go by the blue book, because my rx2 would be worth peanuts.

Rob XX 7 10-18-09 04:54 PM

as someone who has owned quite a few FCs I place no extra value on the GTUs

I place value on any lower mileage FC in original or great condition, so if your car falls into that category then you got a great deal at $1800.

Hypertek 10-18-09 05:00 PM

FCs only hold value to people who care/know about them.. they are cheapass cars to the rest of the world =(

well said.

if the K is scratched out by an L,then its a restamped, can any one else verify this?it only has about 2k miles less than mine,so you got a deal.
ill look into it a little more.then ill re-post.
Thanks

Oh, in that case yes, you could hold on to the GTUs for another 16 years and it will probably be worth something when it is as old as your RX-2 is now. However, right now it is just another non-turbo 5-lug FC RX-7, and its value is based only on its condition as explained above by Rob XX 7. I think the main reason for a lack of interest in the car is because the only significant unique feature is its 4.33 LSD, but unfortunately it is a viscous LSD, which is the worst type for performance. Even the 1988 10th Anniversary RX-7 doesn't have any collector value right now, and its limited production was intentional to make it unique as opposed to the GTUs which was limited due to poor sales. My 88 SE is rare due to its brilliant black paint job that was not even listed as an option by Mazda, but that doesn't make it worth a lot of money. I suppose you could find somebody who would pay more for a GTUs for personal reasons, but I think it would be dishonest to act like the car has a high market value right now.

The letter L is on the firewall as does not look to be messed with. I will know in a week whether I will keep her or part her out.

funkjaw 10-19-09 01:51 PM

I think the rareness of the car is unique and definitely warrants a higher value. You could post it for a third or more than what it is actually worth. Also for certain racing classes this is the best Rx7 you can buy as it is the best non turbo FC produced and people do look for that.

Battle Cat 10-19-09 03:10 PM

IMO the 90 GTUs(non restamped) are rare... roughly 100 were made(non restamped).

the reason its a great/rare car is because for being a S5, it is the only S5 n/a that came with an LSD (430 gear ratio?) and a higher gear ratio tranny.

Its a great n/a car. also its the only s5 with no sun roof as well.

But what makes the car is the LSD, tranny, no sun roof, and the fact that its the lightest S5.

not to mention but full black interior, mani windows, turbo seats. etc....

you should swap a 20B n/a in there(thats how it was supposed to originally come from the factory.)

I will probably build this car I was thinking parting it out but it would be a shame to destroy it. Who cares if it's not a 69 yenko camaro in my heart it is. It's a shame jap cars are worthless. I was never really into second gens I had a T2 in early 90's and tons of old school rx's and first gens. Do you have any pics of the Japanese versions with the 20b's?

No Jap Version with a 20B, Just a US market Idea.
A GTUs is sweet because there are not alot. But it's not a "collectors item", it's more of a conversation piece. They are a pleasure to own and fix up, and beat on. It's the best out of the box N/A you can get. As far as resale value, you can get more than any old GXL, GTU or any other N/A just because the car has nostalgia to those who know about it. It's not going to sell for as much as an S5 Turbo, but a GTUs in good shape can fetch equal to an S4 TII.
The turbo guys don't care for them and just throw them into the N/A group and say they're worth peanuts because of the 6 port. They bastardized because of these. N/A owners respect the car more because they've had other model N/A's I.E. Slow Base models, and GXL pigs. Sport model and 88 GTU owners are a little closer, but it's still better. Having had All N/A models besides the sport. The GTUs is one to settle on.

I'd like to get another GTUs, but not another Turbo. I'm partial to N/A's just because I started there.
/7/:pbear: stands divided on them.

quoted because this is the only truth in this thread.

an FC is an FC, and the only people who find an FC of any value at all are the ones who actually like them in the first place.

to the rest of the car community, its a unreliable piece of shit, with a crappy engine, worth nothing.

i dont see any special value to a GTUs, but if it meets your price range, and you think its worth something, more power to you.

yea like he said above, there is no GTUs 20b in japan... but originally the GTUs
was supposed to be marketed in the US as a 20B FC, but due to emissions control,etc... it was put together as 13b....

but it is the best n/a FC to buy hands down... build it, enjoy it.. itll be lots of fun...

I look at the fcs as the japanese versions of camaro's.

ever since i sold my GTUs, ive regretted selling it.. hopefully when my FD is done ill get another one..

Dusty2Rusty 10-28-09 07:14 PM

lol I emailed Mazda because I wanted to know how many 1990 GTUs there were and here's what they said.
Hello Mr. Opalinsky,

We have looked into your inquiry and have determined that 199 units of that specific year & model were sold in total.

Regards,
Mazda Canada Inc.

I thought that was pretty cool even though it took them like 5 days to respond

rex3 10-28-09 07:44 PM

Wow 199 units, that makes them pretty rare. I have the car home now and it runs but like shit. I am going to play with it this weekend, I am thinking about running her on e85 like the rx2. The title is still in the original owners name with 33 miles on it. The wife thinks it's a nice car and she hates my rx2 so I think it's a keeper.

Stanello 10-28-09 10:42 PM

IIRC there were 10 black/black cars built...

I've read this claim before, but I don't think there's ever been any documentation confirming it. First, this could only be true for the rarer 1990 models; there were a decent number of '89 GTUs cars in Brilliant Black. If there really were 199 GTUs cars in 1990 and they were only offered in red, white and black, 10 seems like an improbably small number.

As for the 199 number, is it true that 100 were unaltered VIN cars and the others were 99 restamped VIN '89s?

Dusty2Rusty 10-29-09 04:02 PM

not too sure about that it's possible, I just asked the sales/distribution department how many 1990 Mazda Rx7 GTUs were made and sold not sure if they included restamps
