Why are US T2's Labeled T2?

the USA turbo models all are called Turbo II, and the common story is that since its Mazda's second turbo rotary its called Turbo II. this part is fine. the 84-85 12A Turbo, would be the Turbo 1

fine right?

but in Japan, the FC was a GT, GT-R, GT-X, GT-Limited and Cabriolet. In the US we didn't get the Turbo 1, so they only called it a T2 in the market that had no idea what a T1 was.

I figured if anyone on here would have had a good answer, it would have been you!

Don't forget Infini I-IV!

Perhaps Turbo 2 is supposed to mean turbo 2nd gen? Although I too have also always thought it was the 2nd turbo rotary. The 86 Cosmo had the same engine as the s4 turbo though.

Pretty sure the Aus delivered ones had a turboII sticker on them but were never actually referred to as a turbo 2. I just put it down to everything in the 80s and 90s would have a turbo sticker or badge if it had a turbo, and the roman numerals looked snappy in the eyes of the marketing dept

I looked through pages and pages of literature I have on these cars... This includes many many books and articles and the only reference i found to why Mazda chose the name TurboII is this:

And now we have done a 180, cars with no capability for turbocharging are labeled "Turbo" (re: Taycan Turbo). Maybe Porsche should borrow from Mazda and use "Turbo 0"?

I think Mazda just sorta jumped on the bandwagon with the turbo two moniker for the RX-7 TII.

In early/mid '80s you already had such cars as Renault R5 Turbo II and Honda City Turbo II.
