88 fc n/a cold start issue

Ok so just got my first rotary car. 1988 rx7 gxl. Runs and drives preatty decent. However to start it after not driving for a day or so it won't start. The former owner poured gas in the air filter to start it...then it runs good and will start as long as it hasn't set for more than a few hours...wtf? While I'm an old car guy and have sprayed many a carb with starter fluid this doesn't seems right on a fuel injected car nor does it seem safe. Any suggestions??

Fuel pump maybe??? Come on tis is making me nuts

misterstyx69 03-07-17 01:33 AM

dirty fuel injectors?
most likely have not been looked at since the car was manufactured!
Look up stuff like "car won't start" , "Flooded"..Deflooding..
That should give you an idea.

more than likely a failing fuel pump switch in the AFM, try jumpering the yellow pump test connector and see if it starts more reliably.

I'll give this a shot. I plan on new injectors down the line anyway bc loke was said probably haven't been touched since 88

jump the yellow to what? Sorry my manual is on the way and not familiar with wiring on these cars

The yellow test connector is a two pin connector, near the passenger side strut. Jump the two wires together.

thanks this worked like a charm! So what do u need to replace to make it run like that without the jump wire. I am sure this isn't a permanent fix as it keeps fuel pump running.

Replace the AFM.

any benefits to an upgrade over oem? I will be deleting all emissions and ac in near future...

Upgraded what? There are no upgraded AFMs, they all suck. If you want to ditch it, get a standalone ECU and switch to a speed density tune.

little apposed my pay grade right now but will keep it in mind

RotaryEvolution 03-09-17 09:26 PM

then nope, there is no upgraded AFM. the reconditioned ones you might come across are usually junk.

find a good used one from someone, they aren't too expensive.
